OSSIAN — Even in the mind of Columbia City head coach Randy Hudgins, Friday night’s 32-10 victory at Norwell was unbelievable.
That’s because in one season, the Eagles went from the basement of the Northeast Hoosier Conference to the top, clinching a share of their second NHC title in school history and first since 1990.
CHURUBUSCO — “We played tough,” ’Busco head coach Lee Etzler said as he addressed his team in postgame comments. “We need to play tough again next week.” With those comments Etzler both summed up Friday night’s 45-28 Northeast Corner Conference title clinching win over the visiting Lakeland Lakers, and set the tone for next week’s opening round of the IHSAA sectionals.
The Eagles clinched their second consecutive share of the NECC crown, dropping the Lakers for the second year in a row.
AKRON — Whitko continued its shock and awe for the season on Friday night clinching its first solo Three Rivers Conference title in the last 20 years.
In a close battle against TRC powerhouse Tippicanoe Valley, the Wildcats carried the honor of Coach Wayne Swender’s Indianapolis Colts Coach of the Week award to a 21-14 victory.
After the game, as the players chanted, “Coach of the Week,” Swender broke into the huddle interrupting his team, “No, no, no, it’s team of the week!”
