Whitko runs to back-to-back conference titles

   AKRON — This winning thing is beginning to repeat itself for Whitko boys’ cross country.
   A season after claiming a Three Rivers Conference title, the Wildcats were back Thursday to defend it.
   With all five runners in the top 10, Whitko had no trouble doing so with second-place Rochester not within reach 29-68.

Second half goals cap senior night

   COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagle soccer team honored its eight senior members in grand style Thursday night, sending them off with a 3-1 senior night win over Fort Wayne South Side that fittingly was capped off by a goal from one of the “Elite Eight.”

   FORT WAYNE — The postseason left a tall order for Columbia City boys’ soccer to take on Thursday night.
   With regular season losses to two of the three teams joining them in the Homestead sectional, the Eagles faced one of those teams in Huntington North.
   A relentless series of attacks by both teams took Columbia City into the second half with a one-goal deficit.

Program, teacher lauded for helping student find success

Chances were slim Mitchell Sarrazin would ever get more than a Certificate of Completion from Smith-Green Jr-Sr High School. Passages Children Services was able to help him with some occupational, physical and speech therapy, but once he turned three, he had to travel to Fort Wayne to a special preschool—no special needs programs existed in his town of Churubusco.

Race for council seat has eight contenders

The Whitley County Republican Party will hold a caucus Oct. 20 to select a new member to the Whitley County Council to replace outgoing at-large Councilman Jim Banks.
Banks resigned his spot effective Nov. 2 to run unopposed for the Indiana State Senate seat vacated by retiring Sen. Dr. Gary Dillon.
According to the Voter Registration Office, seven candidates have thrown their hat into the ring for the position. Banks said Tuesday he knows of at least one more who intends to file.
“I expect a few more to jump in as well,” he said.
