Theme park wish of local girl to be granted

Eleven-year-old Payton Jagger will get her wish of a trip to a Florida theme park in December, but the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana is allowing her community to be a part of passing it on.

Club, business to cook Thanksgiving dinner

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City Rotarians and Sherri Grim from Sherri’s Place Restaurant in Columbia City are talking turkey.
Thanksgiving turkey, that is.
The Rotary Club is joining forces with Sherri’s Place to offer a community Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, for anyone in the community, including those who can’t travel to Sherri’s Place for the meal.
“Some have money, but don’t have family,” said Grim, and gave the invitation to “come and eat!”
The meals are free, but those who can may give a donation which will be given to a local food bank.

Roy “Sam” McCoy, 96

Roy G. “Sam” McCoy, 96, of Jefferson Township, Whitley County, died at 4:10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 at Renaissance Village where he had been a resident since September.

He was born Oct. 7, 1914 in Washington Township, Whitley County, a son of Orin Hubert and Edna Mae (Schinbeckler) McCoy. In 1926 his family moved to Jefferson Township. He graduated from Jefferson Center High School in 1933.

Suzanne Shock, 65

Suzanne Jeanne Shock, 65, of North Webster, passed away at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born Oct. 2, 1945 in Muncie, she was a daughter of Dallas Floyd and Marguerite J. “Peggy” (Sweeney) Buis.

Martha Miller, 72

November 5, 2010

Martha J. Miller, 72, of Garrett, died at 4:10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 at Cameron Hospital, Angola. She was born July 13, 1938 in Whitley County to Harold and Helen (Traster) Cooperrider and they preceded her in death. She married Edward E. Miller Sept. 6, 1958 in Columbia City and he died Oct. 12, 2002. Martha was a collator at Renaissance Publishing in Auburn, retiring in 2001.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Auburn and the Ashley Eastern Star Lodge 229.

Deborah Verberkmoes, 48

Deborah J. “Debbie” Verberkmoes, 48, of Columbia City, died at 3:18 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital Rehab, Fort Wayne where she was transferred Oct. 21 from Parkview Hospital, where she was admitted Sept. 17.

She was born Feb. 17, 1962 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Ralph B. and Marian J. (Chandler) Weller. Her formative years were spent in the New Haven area. She graduated from Heritage High School and International Business College.

On June 14, 1985 she was united in marriage to Randall C. Verberkmoes. They have always made their home in the Columbia City area.

Stars align in class A title game

   Each week of the Indiana high school football postseason has had its share of tests for the class A Churubusco Eagles.
   The sectional opener was titled for its revenge of an early exit the year before to Adams Central.
   After getting by the Flying Jets, a road trip to Southern Wells pitted rushing against rushing with Churubusco coming out on top in a defensive battle 12-6.
   Sectional championship week has a new test for ’Busco with the high- scoring offense of the South Adams Starfires.

New kindergartner assessment provides picture of progress

A child’s first introduction into a classroom is often the first day of kindergarten and teachers in Whitley County Consolidated Schools are beefing up the way these youngsters are evaluated.
Mary Raber Elementary School Principal Julie Turpin presented a new kindergarten report card to the school corporation’s Board of School Trustees during the panel’s Monday work session.

   The 2010 Indiana high school football season has certainly been good to Columbia City quarterback Logan Rehrer.
   School passing records have fallen. A Northeast Hoosier Conference championship has been captured and an appearance in the sectional championship awaits Friday night.
   The QB at the top of all the Columbia City career passing records has another recognition to add to that list.
