The Salute to Veterans this year, with a theme of ‚ÄúThe Places I‚Äôve Seen‚ÄĚ was held at the library‚Äôs new stage area in the basement.
‚ÄúFreedom isn‚Äôt free,‚ÄĚ said Fleck, ‚ÄúVeterans are the ones who paid the price.‚ÄĚ
Janet Scank, director of the library, acted as emcee, introducing the all-local talent at this year‚Äôs event.
Three churches will open their doors to host Thanksgiving services next week. The public is invited to attend any of the services.
Two groups are also planning Thanksgiving dinners for those who have nowhere to go or are unable to afford Thanksgiving dinner
Author of ‚ÄúMistaken Identity,‚ÄĚ Newell Cerak, will be the headliner for the Whitley County Youth For Christ (YFC) ‚Äú2010 Piece Rally‚ÄĚ at the Eagle‚Äôs Nest Event Center at 7 p.m. Thursday, Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with coffee and dessert available.
Cerak is the father of Whitney Cerak, a Taylor University student who survived a tragic automobile accident in 2006, but was mistakenly identified as another student.
Three seasons after appearing in the 2007 class A semistate championship and tying a school best 11-3 record, it’s hard to believe Churubusco football has actually had a better year in 2010.
The small school of 423 students has seen a revival of its football program as of late. The Eagles are in the midst of their sixth consecutive winning season and second semistate appearance in four years Friday night when they travel to No. 1 Lafayette Central Catholic.
COLUMBIA CITY — The coach shuffle was in motion as area high school and middle school coaches were accepting and resigning from jobs at the Whitley County Consolidated Schools board meeting Monday night.
The Columbia City wrestling program’s two-week search for a head coach ended with assistant coach Blain Culp getting the job.
In the Oct. 18 board meeting, Culp was approved as an assistant coach for the Eagles. At the same time then head coach Jeff Slain turned in his resignation.

SOUTH WHITLEY — After a tough county loss to Columbia City Lady Eagles Friday night, the Whitko Lady Wildcats took out their frustration on the Churubusco Lady Eagles Saturday.
“This group is working as hard, if not harder than any team we’ve had, we’ll never doubt their work ethic and effort and their desire to win,” Whitko head coach Rob Bell said.
’Busco put up a fight, but the Lady Wildcats came out on top with a 67-48 win.
CHURUBUSCO — “This is what you have to do in the big games,” Kyle Mathewson said.
The words that said it all in Churubusco Friday night as the Eagles handed an undefeated Hagerstown team its first loss in the class A regional championship. The crown won ’Busco a match-up with the No. 1 team in class A football next week at Lafayette Central Catholic.
Exactly what the Eagles did was repeat the steps of the 2007 when current Churubusco seniors, as freshmen also won a regional title.
COLUMBIA CITY — Friday night marked several new beginnings for the Columbia City Lady Eagle basketball squad. The Donald S. Weeks gymnasium was the site of not only the beginning of a new season for the Lady Eagles, but it also marked the beginning of a new era in coaching.
For the first time in 33 years there was a new face directing the Lady Eagles. First-year head coach Amy Shearer directed the Lady Eagles against cross-county rival Whitko.
Coesse Elementary School students have been taught well about the importance our veterans have played in the American freedoms we enjoy.
Thursday, they presented a Veterans Day program under the direction of Becky Walter, choir director, honoring veterans from their community, many with direct descendants in the school.
Called ‚ÄúAmerica, the land of Heroes‚ÄĚ the program guide stated ‚ÄúPatriotism is little hands holding little flags.‚ÄĚ Throughout the various patriotic songs, that is just what the students did, making the bleachers a sea of waving red, white and blue.
