Tracking fee to increase on city electric bills

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City residents, and those who get their electricity from Columbia City utilities, will see their rates go up for the first quarter of the new year.
The monthly tracking fee will increase by 74 cents per 1,000 kilowatt hours. For the average residential customer, the rate will change by approximately 52 cents.
The tracking fee is a pass-through fee used by the city to cover the cost charged to the city by Indiana Municipal Power Agency.

Retrial opens with testimony from victim

COLUMBIA CITY —The jury in the second trial of a Pennsylvania man accused of sexual crimes against a minor heard opening statements, and the first testimony, before the trial’s opening day came to a close early Tuesday evening.
Dustin W. Shenberger, 36, of Mercersburg, Pa. is accused of child molestation and sexual misconduct with a minor in connection with incidents that allegedly happened between him and a local woman, now 19.
The alleged victim was 13 and 14 years old when the alleged incidents occurred.

Marilyn Barker, 81

Marilyn C. Barker, 81, of Pierceton, died at 11:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2010 at her residence at Peabody Retirement Community.
Born in Pierceton, she was a daughter of Jacob Clair and Catherine Marie (Beigh) McCarter. She married Harold T. Barker, Jan. 16, 1949 in Pierceton.
A 1947 Pierceton High School graduate, she was an office clerk for L.M. Berry retiring in 1987 after 18 years.

Wayne Howenstine, 47

Wayne B. Howenstine, 47, of Leesburg, passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 at his home. He was born Sept. 26, 1963 in Huntington, a son of Jay H. and Myrtle Alice (Oxley) Howenstine.
Survivors include a sister, Rhonda Ousley and a brother, Steve Howenstine.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Owen Family Funeral Home, St. Rd. 13 & CR 500N, North Webster. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Wyman of the North Webster Church of the Brethren officiating. Burial will follow at the North Webster Cemetery (Mock Addition).

Mary Lee Smith, 76

Mary Lee Smith, 76, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010 at 10:20 p.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor.
Born Feb. 21, 1934 in Chicago, Ill., she was a daughter of Arthur and Ada (Harrison) Martinez.
Survivors include her husband, Garland Lee Smith; a daughter, Tami (Mark) Dular; a son, Bradley Smith; four brothers, Arthur Martinez, John Martinez, Paul Martinez and George Martinez; and two sisters, Berniece Jerique and Georgie Baker.

Robert C. Miller, 84

Robert C. Miller, 84, of Plymouth died at 12 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth. He had been in declining health for a couple of years.
Born May 22, 1926 in Columbia City, he was a son of William and Margaurite (Klingaman) Miller. He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1944 and served honorably and proudly in the U.S. Army in Europe from Sept. 6, 1944 to June 21, 1946 during World War II, receiving a Bronze Star for bravery while serving.

Lady Eagles stay airborne on road

   FORT WAYNE — With a new head coach and system, Columbia City girls’ basketball has not skipped a beat in 2010.
   The Lady Eagles have spent most of November winning by an average margin of 14.4 points per game.
   Tuesday, Columbia City ended a 5-1 record in November with another blowout win on the road at Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger 46-32.

Young, ’Busco holds off Adams Central

   DECATUR — You have to go back five seasons for the last time Churubusco girls’ basketball had two wins in November.
   Tuesday night, the Lady Eagles did it for just the second time in the last five years winning at Adams Central, 47-41.
   The win is the first on the road this season for ’Busco. The last victory on the road for the Lady Eagles came back in February of 2009 at Hamilton.
