In an effort to wipe out hunger, the second annual United Way’s Day of Caring food drive is in full swing with blue donation barrels placed at various businesses in Columbia City, South Whitley and Churubusco. All food donated at the barrels will remain in Whitley County by supporting local food banks.
The foresight of the Peabody Public Library board 10 years ago has become a reality with the completion of Phase I of a $1.2 million expansion project.
When the library was initially constructed, a large empty hole was to be excavated under the main floor of the library. The board at the time chose to go ahead and pour the concrete and leave it as an unfinished area with an eye to future expansion.
A North Manchester man was arrested Monday evening after he allegedly locked a woman and her child in the trunk of his car, sexually assaulted the mother and then fled police.

Juanita S. Mueller, 88, of Columbia City, died at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2010 at Heritage Park Nursing Home, Fort Wayne where she had been a resident for the past two years.
She was born Dec. 14, 1921 in Allen County, a daughter of John and Celeste (Bubb) Gibson. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne where she attended Catholic Schools.
Freida Blanche Fleck, 95, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City. Born July 5, 1915 in Columbia Township, she was a daughter of Charles Grover and Estella Mae (Crawford) Wynkoop.
Delmar Bazil Jackson, Jr., 78, of South Whitley, passed away at 7:14 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at his home. Born Oct. 28, 1931 in Putman County, he was a son of Bazil and Venia Grace (Bowles) Jackson, Sr.
Emery Franklin Rowland, 88, of Claypool, died at 9:35 p.m. Aug. 28, 2010 at Millers Merry Manor in Warsaw.
A lifetime resident of Claypool, he was born Oct. 14, 1921 to Merl and Anna (Shepherd) Rowland. He married Phyllis Hoover May 19, 1941 in Claypool.
He was a farmer, retiring in 2004 and his memberships included the Claypool United Methodist Church; Farm Bureau; and the Miami Valley Milk Producers, of which he was a board member.
He enjoyed visits from his children and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
