PFC Tommy Wallace had just returned to his base from a mission is Kalsu, Iraq, when he skyped his mom, Ellen, here in Columbia City.
Skype is a software application used for making voice calls over the Internet and also allows a live view of the callers.
For him, it was nearly 8 p.m. For his mom, it was just after lunch Thursday.
He regularly checked in with his mom, knowing his girlfriend, Amber Waybright, was soon due with their baby. The doctor had induced labor and Waybright had just started pushing when Wallace called.
“The timing was perfect,” Waybright said.
By the next Columbia City Common Council meeting, the city should have an agreement ready with Parkview Health System Inc. for its share of the costs for the upcoming state Route 205 construction project.
Columbia City Mayor Jim Fleck said Friday at the board of works meeting that a proposed agreement is in place with Parkview for the contribution to the city for the local match of the project.
“Upon acceptance of that agreement, we will receive a check,” Fleck said.
FORT WAYNE – In observance of the Labor Day holiday, National Serv-All offices and operations will be closed on Monday, September 6, 2010.
When Whitley County, specifically Columbia City, was doused in a torrential downpour June 11, Columbia Shores resident Carl Trent, like many, found his house surrounded, and to some extent filled, with water.
“It was like somebody opened the flood gates,” he said of what occurred when he opened his garage door that morning.

State Route 14 in South Whitley is scheduled to be closed Monday, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
A county council meeting July 28 which likely violated Indiana’s open door law has now resulted in a formal complaint at the state level.
August 27th
ALBION — Not only is the Churubusco football team undefeated for the season, but opponents have yet to find a way to score against the 2-0 Eagles.
‘Busco made the trip to Albion to face North East Corner Conference foe Central Noble. Using an opportunistic defense and a potent offensive mix the Eagles handed the Cougars a 44-7 loss Friday night.
SOUTH WHITLEY — “Since the beginning of the year we were waiting for this game,” said Eagles QB Logan Rehrer.
It was 2004 and Columbia City was a 1-9 team with the lone win coming against one of its most hated rivals.
Almost six years later to the day, the Eagles went into South Whitley as an undefeated team and left as one.
Friday night, the Eagles renewed a long lost rivalry with Whitko by jumping on the Wildcats early and junior Jacob Johnson finished it from there.
Good news for Smith-Green schools came with a visit from Jay Hilliard, Commander of the Gilbert-Davis American Legion Post 157 in Churubusco.
Hilliard presented a check for $250 directly to Smith-Green Community Schools. Dave Vaughn, member of the Executive Board at the Post, said, “To my knowledge, this is the first up-front donation directly to the schools.”
The funds are intended to help students who may not be able to afford backpacks and school supplies.

Karla K. Coyle-Kammeyer, age 45, of Fort Wayne passed away at 10 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born Nov. 16, 1964 in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Kay L. and Yvonne “Bonnie” (Newsome) Coyle.
