State says no complaint received about July county council meeting

     A complaint a local resident said he filed in August at the state level about a county council meeting that may have been in violation of Indiana’s open door law apparently never made it to right place.
     South Whitley resident Terry Goodrich said he mailed the complaint form to the Indiana Public Access Counselor in August, but a representative from the office said Monday the complaint was never received.

West Nile virus back in Whitley County

     Once again, Whitley County has mosquitoes in it that tested positive for West Nile Virus during the state’s latest round of tests.
     The Indiana State Department of Health took samples in the county Aug. 31 and found two pools of mosquitoes with the West Nile virus, according to Scott Wagner, environmental health specialist for the Whitley County Health Department.
     West Nile has been found in the county for several years and has been in the same location during the last several tests.

Sheriff’s reserves plan ATV fundraising ride

     “Reserve your right to ride,” the slogan reads for the first annual Whitley County Sheriff’s Reserves fundraising ATV and motorcycle ride.
     Just as they do every year, the reserve deputy program hosts two fundraisers to help with equipment and supplies for the job they do for the sheriff’s department for no pay.
     A breakfast at the Whitley County 4-H grounds is one annual fundraiser done for years, but this year, the program will test new waters with the ATV ride.

Gerald Imbody, 49

Gerald “Jay” R. Imbody, 49, of Payne, Ohio passed away at 2:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 at the home of his mother. Born May 7, 1961 in Fort Wayne, he was a son of Gerald and Gloria (Juillerat) Imbody.

Jeanice Graves, 84

Jeanice C. Graves, 84, of rural Columbia City, died at 12:44 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010 at the Hospice Home, Fort Wayne where she was admitted July 28.

She was born Aug. 22, 1926 in Columbia City, a daughter of Joe and Freeda I. (Decker) Sharpe. She graduated from Columbia City High School and Ravenscroft Beauty College.

On June 4, 1946 she was united in marriage to Norman William Graves. They made their home in Columbia City, Syracuse and later Roanoke for 20 years before moving to their home south of Columbia City in 1986.

John Cowen, 83

John T. Cowen, 83, a resident of Columbia City, died at 2:48 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born Sept. 18, 1926 in Fort Wayne, a son of Theodore Cowen and Ilene Snyder. His formative years were spent in Columbia City where he was raised by foster parents, Purl and Wilma Schoeff. After graduating from Columbia City High School, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served during W. W. II.

City handles New Haven

   COLUMBIA CITY — It didn’t matter what foot it came from, just about everything was at or in the goal Monday night for Columbia City girls’ soccer.
   Hosting a Northeast Hoosier Conference special against New Haven, City had five different Lady Eagles post a goal in what was an early lead and 5-0 shutout for Columbia City.
   “Our first two goals were within the first 10 minutes so we set the pace right there,” said Columbia City head coach Nicole Gebfert.

Irene R. Rust, 85

Irene R. Rust, 85, of Fort Wayne passed away Sept. 11, 2010.  She was born Sept. 15, 1924 to the late Charley and Hazel (Dennis) Robison.  She retired from Sears after 25 years of service.  She was a member of the Nine Mile United Methodist Church, Allen Co. Farm Bureau, and Allen Co. Extension Home Maker Club.  She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, and reading. 

Surviving family include her children, Gale (Martha) Rust of Roanoke, James (Teresa) Rust of Whitley Co., Nancy (Rick) Bodeker of Avilla, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 

David Hawn, 71

David Henry Hawn, 71, of Columbia City, passed away suddenly at 3:20 p.m. at his residence Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010. Born July 28, 1939 in Fort Wayne, he was a son of Charles A. and Florence A. (Sievers) Hawn.

County sweep: City girls, Whitko boys win at Valley

   AKRON — Two races, two winners Saturday and both were from Whitley County.
   Whether it was in the boys’ or girls’ race at the Tippecanoe Valley Invitational, you saw a county team filling the top spot and several places behind it.
   No runner or team outside of Whitley County got to experience a win Saturday. Behind an individual first-place win in the boys’ race by Trapper Mize, Whitko used four runners in the top 10 to beat out  second-place Rochester 79-34.
