First candidate files to fill council seat

Stephen Smith became the first person to file his candidacy to fill the seat on Whitley County Council that will become vacant in November.
Jim Banks resigned that seat, effective Nov. 2, due to his election to the Indiana State Senate. Banks is unopposed in the race for the seat held by retiring senator Dr. Gary Dillon.
Smith is a South Whitley resident and local businessman. In 2009 Smith and Dwayne Knott entered into a partnership with ALLPro Towing Inc. and started Whitley Environmental after being awarded the county’s recycling contract.

Harriet E. Wiard, 98

September 23, 2010

Harriet E. Wiard, 98, a resident of Fort Wayne and widow of Donald D. Wiard, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at Hamilton House in Fort Wayne.

She was born in Charlevoix, Mich. Aug. 31, 1912, a daughter of Charles J. and Amelia (Schaffer) Cork.

The surviving relatives include a daughter, Phyllis Arvola and two sons, Robert C. Wiard and Richard Wiard.

Richard Clouse, 65

Richard “Rich” Lee Clouse, 65, of Columbia City, passed away at 3:33 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born July 6, 1945 in Kendallville, Noble County, he was the son of Wilber “Pete” Raymond and Bernice Eloise (Kitson) Clouse.

   The Indiana High School football regular season is half over. Going into week six, Columbia City gets its biggest test yet for homecoming. Churubusco faces NECC sleeper and Whitko tries to stay unbeaten in the TRC.

Lester Menzie, 79

September 22, 2010

Lester “Bud” E. Menzie, 79, of Pierceton, died at 8:40 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 at Parkview Hospital of Fort Wayne.

He was born July 11, 1931 in Columbia City to John and Edith (Whiteleather) Menzie. He lived in Pierceton since 1976, living in Larwill previously. On May 15, 1959, he married Alice Eman in Olympia, Wash.

He worked for Kolbin Tool and Die as a machine operator and retired in 2002. He was a member of the American Legion Post 256. He was a Korean War Veteran; a sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Absalom Wilson, 99

Absalom Wilson, 99, of Rome City died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 at 1:55 a.m. in Lakeland Nursing Center in Angola.

Mr. Wilson was a 1929 graduate of Chippewa High School in Wabash County and received his bachelor’s degree in 1933 from Indiana Central College.

Col. City nets sweep over Norwell

   COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagle volleyball team built on the success of Saturday’s second-place finish at the Wawasee tournament sweeping Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent    Norwell in three close games, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 at the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium Tuesday night.
   All three games matched the Lady Eagles strong play at the net versus the strong serving game of the Lady Knights.

Eagles victory secures top finish in NHC

   COLUMBIA CITY — It’s another season almost over and again Columbia City boys’ tennis is known among the best in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.
   After a 5-0 sweep of Bellmont at DeVol Field Tuesday night, the Eagles 5-1 conference record lands them in no worse than second-place with No. 20 ranked Homestead yet to come Thursday.

Pippenger, Eagles cruise to victory

Churubusco freshman Danielle Pippenger drives home one of her team-high seven kills against Hamilton Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles took a three-game match from the Lady Marines 25-16, 25-6, 25-16. Pippenger tied teammate Heather Monk in kills while Monk also led in digs (9) and blocks (3).

Learning about the needs we have for water

Gene Haskins of the Whitley County Soil and Water Conservation District speaks this morning to elementary students at the Whitley County 4-H Center as part of field day. Haskins talk was one of several activities students participated in during the day. His topic was water quality protection and how much water is needed to make everyday items and raise livestock.
