When it comes to social services, there are many programs out there to help people.
Whether in the form of food stamps, financial assistance, medical care or child care, the task of enrolling in those programs can be daunting, especially for someone already living dollar-to-dollar who can’t afford to drive to all those locations or take time off from a minimum wage job.

Whitley County Consolidated Schools officials are meeting regularly with architects for renovations at the Marshall Community Center in preparation for the Eagle Tech program slated to launch next fall.
The board of school trustees recently approved the combination of the first two phases of the renovations that will be done by Gibraltar Design.
The architectural fees for both phases will cost $131,800, plus other reimbursable expenses.

A Columbia City teenager who pleaded guilty to child molesting for taking off a three-year-old girl’s clothes and bouncing her on his lap was sentenced Monday to six years at the Whitley County Jail with four to serve.
Whitley Circuit Court Judge James Heuer said he wanted to have some portion of the sentence suspended so 18-year-old William B. Leeka could be under the court’s authority and be made to seek sex offender treatment classes.
Senior nursing students at Huntington University will begin working in the Parkview Huntington and Parkview Whitley hospitals this Thursday.
The 10 students will conduct health assessments, give medications, perform several treatments and assist with activities of daily living to fulfill a clinical requirement for one of their current courses, Adult Health II. Five students will work at the Huntington location, and five will care for patients in Columbia City.

A rural Churubusco resident had his initial hearing Monday afternoon in Whitley Circuit Court for allegedly stabbing another man seven times in the gut during a bar fight Sunday morning in Churubusco.
Twenty-six-year-old John W. Reed was originally charged with aggravated battery, battery causing bodily injury and criminal recklessness, but those charges were amended to a class C felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon.
Once the ordinance is published for the public to see, it will be illegal to buy or possess any form of synthetic marijuana in Whitley County.
“We’re not going to allow it to be sold in the county and be possessed in the county,” Whitley County Commissioner Mike Schrader said after the commissioners voted Tuesday to put the ordinance in place.
Marianne Clark, age 79, of Columbia City, Ind. passed away at 9:25 am on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, Ind. Born on Aug. 30, 1931 in Whitley County, Ind. she was the daughter of Fred A. and Coral R. (Bills) Nei.
Richard D. “Dick” Heintzelman, age 57, of Columbia City, Ind., died at 4:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, Ind. He was born on Aug. 29, 1953 to Ross V. and Charleene M.(Kauffman) Heintzelman.
