WCCS ponders joining small-school resolution

COLUMBIA CITY — At Monday’s work session of the Whitley Consolidated School Corporation, Superintendent Dr. Patricia O’Connor and corporation Business Manager Tony Zickgraf presented a document to the board that was drafted by the John Glenn School Corporation.
The document — a call out to the Indiana Legislature.
The Walkerton-based school corporation drafted a resolution to Indiana lawmakers and sent letters to WCCS and other districts around the state.

Holiday games set for CC, Whitko

   While others are gaining rest and relaxation over the holidays, two local will be featured in tournament play.
   Columbia City plays host for two different tournaments. On Dec. 28, the boys’ basketball team will be part of a four-team shoot-out. The schedule includes: 10 a.m. — FW Blackhawk Christian vs Columbia City, noon — Prairie Heights vs Wapahani, 6 p.m. — Wapahani vs FW Blackhawk Christian, 8 p.m. — Columbia City vs Prairie Heights.

Planning chief seeks county's guidance for wind rules

COLUMBIA CITY — County planner Dave Sewell, several weeks removed from a disappointing setback involving the ordinance designed to regulate wind farms, appealed to the Whitley County Commissioners for guidance Monday.
“Before the (Whitley County) Plan Commission goes back to any consideration of the proposed wind ordinance, I wanted to come to you and ask the commissioners for any direction you might have,” said Sewell.
Sewell was instrumental in drafting a proposed ordinance that would oversee the arrival and construction of any “wind farm” in Whitley County.

ISMS students prepare for state competition

COLUMBIA CITY — While most youngsters might be content making a rudimentary house or fort out of building blocks, talented students at Indian Springs Middle School are taking construction with the popular LEGOs to all new heights.
A team of six 8th-graders from the Columbia City school, with scientific minds way too sophisticated for a Neanderthal newspaper reporter, are constructing robots with electronic brains advanced enough to compete against the best of the best in Indiana — and hopefully the world.

Kreigers return, edge Whitko

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Former Columbia City coaches, Wayne and Scott Kreiger, traveled back to Whitley County Wednesday night with the Canterbury Lady Cavaliers (5-2) to take on the Whitko Lady Wildcats (3-5).
   Whitko fought to pull out a win over the Lady Cavaliers, who have won the Class A State Championship for the last three consecutive years.
   The Lady Wildcats fell short, losing to Canterbury 69-63.

County to spend $13,000 to improve police radio signals

COLUMBIA CITY — A new system was approved by the Whitley County Commissioners Monday that will help emergency crews in South Whitley communicate better with the county’s new 800 MHz radios.
Scott Jones, Whitley County’s 911 Director presented a proposal to the commissioners Monday for a Dispatch Voter System to be used to enhance signal in South Whitley, which has traditionally had reception issues because of what Jones described as low elevation.

County updates workplace data

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Commissioners updated a resolution declaring the county’s office as a “drug-free” workplace.
The resolution was presented to the commissioners by Matt Showalter, community development director for Region III-A of the Economic Development District & Regional Planning Commission.
Region III-A worked with the county to update the resolution as part of a grant application with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

Remembering the men and women over there

The Leatherneck Coffee Club, comprised of U.S. Marine veterans of Whitley County were busy Tuesday packing care packages for local troops serving overseas. The bulk of donations came from the Whitley County Consolidated Schools Central office staff, according to Grant and Linda Loy, organizers. The boxes will be sent to Adam Neireiter, Jeff Daniel and Preston Lewis from Whitley County who are all serving in Afghanistan, as well as others from northeastern Indiana. The addresses were acquired from the Mothers of Marines organization for Northeast Indiana.

Technology growth requires more space

COLUMBIA CITY — Technology Director Anne Plunkett presented the school district’s new technology plan to the Whitley County Consolidated Schools’ Board of School Trustees Monday night.
During her presentation, Plunkett told the board that information technology grows in importance with each passing year, making a technology plan in the school system vital.
“It’s important for the staff and students that the technology is there,” said Plunkett.

Phyllis Mitchell, 88

Phyllis E. Mitchell, 88, of Columbia City, passed away at 7:55 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 at her home. Born Sept. 29, 1922 in Columbia City, she was a daughter of Victor and Hazlette (Brubaker) Phend.
