COLUMBIA CITY â€” One of Whitley County Consolidated School Corporationâ€™s tenants in the Marshall Community Building is moving out.
Superintendent Dr. Patricia Oâ€™Connor read a letter to the corporationâ€™s Board of School Trustees Monday night from Robert Huffman, Executive Director of Region 8 Education Service Center, which had its headquarters located in Columbia City for more than five years.
â€śIt is with a degree of sadness that I find myself writing this letter to you,â€ť wrote Huffman.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The Whitley County Consolidated School Corporationâ€™s Board of School Trustees joined hands with a host of other school districts in sending a message to the state legislature â€” and the board did it with the stroke of the pen.
At its regular meeting Monday, the board signed a resolution that had been presented to the panel earlier this month, drafted by the John Glenn School Corporation and addressed to Indiana lawmakers.
The Walkerton-based school corporation drafted a resolution to Indiana lawmakers and sent letters to WCCS and other districts around the state.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” This was obviously not the sort of early Christmas present the Columbia City Eagle boysâ€™ basketball team was looking for.
The visiting Wawasee Warriors got out early and then used a big third quarter to hand the host Eagles a 66-48 loss Tuesday night.
The Eagles trailed 38-31 at halftime, but the visiting Warriors went on a 17-4 run in the third quarter to put the Eagles in a 55-35 hole.
â€śThey (Wawasee) are a difficult team to play against when coming from behind,â€ť Columbia City Coach Chris Benedict said.
PIERCETON â€” The Whitko Community School Corporation board of school trustees held its monthly meeting Monday evening with superintendent Steve Clason providing several updates.
â€śThe legislative session is going to pick up after Jan. 1 and the biggest item they will have on their plate is the budget. There is a lot of discussion about how they will balance the budget when the income has not re-couped yet from the recession we are in,â€ť Clason said. â€śWe continue to hear that we will be receiving like amounts of funding that we had last year and there will not be any reductions.â€ť
COLUMBIA CITY â€” An Anderson man arrested over the weekend by the Whitley County Sheriffâ€™s Department and charged with two counts of child molesting was in court Monday for an initial hearing.
Terry R. Campbell, 64, was arrested in connection with alleged incidents that occurred with a five-year-old girl in July, according to the Whitley County Prosecutorâ€™s Office.
According to the police report, Campbell lived in Churubusco at the time of the incidents, which the report says occurred between Jan. 1 and July 10 of this year.
The charges were filed against Campbell Dec. 3.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The Whitley County Consolidated School Corporationâ€™s Board of School Trustees agreed Monday night to turn up the heat.
Corporation Business Manager Anthony Zickgraf asked the board to approve the purchase of a new heating system for the Marshall Community Building to replace the facilityâ€™s nearly deceased boiler system.
â€śWeâ€™ve been talking to you for about 18 months for the need of new boilers for the Marshall Building,â€ť Zickgraf told the board.
â€śOne of the two has already given out and the other is 45 years old,â€ť he added.
Lavida P. Kethcart, 94 of Huntington passed away at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 at Norwoodâ€™s Health and Rehabilitation Center. She had worked at Square D Corporation as a coil winder. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother; she was a very caring and giving person.
She was born June 12, 1916 in Whitley County, a daughter of Herbert and Mary (Stallsmith) Clapp.
She was united in marriage to Laurence A. Kethcart June 7, 1936 in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death March 1, 2000.
Helen Lois Johnson, 81, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:58 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born July 6, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio, she was a daughter of Albert and Evelyn (Bushrey) Bourdeau.
She was raised in Toledo, Ohio but lived the majority of her life in Temperance, Mich. before moving to Columbia City in 2001. She attended the Toledo, Ohio school system. A mother and homemaker, she worked for several years as a bus aide for the handicapped in the Bedford School System.
Dorothy M. Murphy, 81, of Columbia City, passed away at 6:16 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, 2010 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City. Born Nov. 5, 1929 in Kokomo, she was a daughter of Carl and Pearl (Hyndman) Boyer. She was the widow of Garner E. Murphy.
At Mrs. Murphyâ€™s request there will be no visitation or services. Burial will be private.

Robert James Adams, 58 of Churubusco died at 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010 at Parkview Main Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in California, he was a son of John and Connie Adams.
Survivors include his wife, Carol (Sharp) Adams; a son, Jarrod Adams; a daughter, Aryan Young and a brother, Richard Adams.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 26 at 113 W. North Park Drive in Columbia City.
