   Three local 4-H members made Whitley County proud Saturday evening as they showcased their livestock achievements at the 40th annual Indiana State Fair Sale of Champions. Katie Barnett (left), Jackie Leeuw (center) and Jackie St. George (right) bested hundreds of other fair entries in order to participate in the coveted spotlight sale.

   Travis Mayberry gets his questions about Native American life answered by Norman Trendle also known as ”Bahteyenokazs” (many names). Trendle was a participant in the weekend’s annual pow wow at Morsches Park.

Parking to change to parallel

   Cars parking in the slanted parking spaces on South Main Street in front of Main Bowl have apparently been violating state and local code for some time.
   Indiana state code permits only parallel parking along state highways, except where local ordinances allow otherwise, as Columbia City does downtown, but only along the courthouse square.

Repair projects top Larwill council agenda

   LARWILL - The town’s 2011 budget has been established and was approved by council members Thursday evening in the amount of $94,619.
   “Only increases made for 2011 were outlook of possibly having construction or de-construction of a home and at least $9,000 for any other expenses which may arise,” clerk-treasurer Renee Sills said. “We would have to use the money that is intended for the capital outlay and rainy day funds.”

   Agnes P. Stanley, 92, of North Manchester died at 6:37 p.m. Aug. 14, 2010 at her residence at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester.
   Born in Whitley County, she was a daughter of the late James W. and Hazel (Raypole) Gaff.
   She married Lloyd E. Stanley Dec. 31, 1941. He preceded her in death Aug. 21, 2008. 

Regular season in the clearing

   Whitko halfback D.J. Fouce breaks into a clearing down the sidelines during the Wildcats scrimmage at Garrett Friday night. Whitko spent time on both offense and defense from different areas of the field prepping for this week’s regular season opener at home. The Wildcats play host to Wawasee as part of a three-game homestand to open the season.

City soccer debuts

   Columbia City senior Devin Rice contends for a loose ball against an East Noble defender Saturday morning. The Eagles traveled to Kendallville for a scrimmage in preparation for the season with the regular season opener Tuesday. City starts off the season playing host to Central Noble in a varsity only match at 5 p.m.

Gridiron open for business

August 16, 2010

   The Columbia City gridiron was open for business for the first time in the 2010 season Friday night. The Eagles played host to Goshen in a scrimmage in full contact. For three series the two squads switch between offense and defense running plays from different areas of the field. Next week, the Eagles get their first taste of the regular season with Warsaw coming to Max Gandy Athletic Field.

     Doris M. Martin, 83, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at The Oaks, Columbia City. Born April 2, 1927 in Joliet, Ill., she was a daughter of Fred E. and Luella M. (Effner) McCloud.
