County's comprehensive plan ready for review

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County planners have been formulating a new document designed to spell out long-range goals for the county.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Whitley County Council, Dave Sewell, Whitley County’s Executive Director of Planning and Building presented each member of the board with a copy of Draft B of the Whitley County Comprehensive Plan.
Planners have been developing a new guide for land use and development over the last year, working with Ground Rules, Inc., a consulting firm.

City lift station gets bandage

COLUMBIA CITY — Workers from Columbia City’s Water Pollution Control Facility were working feverishly Friday afternoon to repair a pump in the lift station for Steel Dynamics Corporation.
“We’re putting a Band-Aid on it today,” said Facility Superintendent Mike Cook.
Cook said the lift station has two pumps. The station needs one pump to operate, but has a second pump as a redundancy.
One of the two pumps came loose from its base, according to Cook.

Lucy Surber, 89

Lucy (Bojrab) Surber, 89, a resident of Fort Wayne and widow of the Rev. Herman E. Surber, passed away at 9:52 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Life Care Center in Fort Wayne. She had been in failing health for some time, and had been a patient there for the past year and a half.
Mrs. Surber was born Aug. 9, 1921 in Eel River Township, a daughter of Samuel and Libby (Slyby) Bojrab. She was the widow of the Rev. Herman E. Surber.
Surviving relatives include her daughter, Suzanne K. Surber; a sister, Mary Bojrab; two brothers, Norman Bojrab, Sr. and George Bojrab.

Hargus Howard, 90

Hargus Howard, 90, formerly of Silver Lake, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 at the Hendry County Medical Center in Clearwater, Fla.
He was born Oct. 8, 1920 in Salyersville Ky., a son of Kendile and Mary (Allen) Howard. He married Hattie England Sept. 1, 1942.
Howard spent most of his life in the Silver Lake area, moving to Florida in 2000. He was a machinist for Gripco and a farmer.
He was a member of Gospel Hill Pentecostal Church of God in Silver Lake.

Taylor Creech, 5 months

January 7, 2011

Taylor Lynn Creech, five months, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
She was born July 28, 2010.
A private burial was held at Oak Grove (Compton) Cemetery, Columbia City.

Robert Hullinger, 81

Robert Keith “Bob” Hullinger, 81, of North Webster, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 4, 2011 at his home. He was born Jan. 16, 1929 in Huntington to Mahlon Henry and Josie Mae (Cloud) Hullinger.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Hullinger; daughter, Rebecca Kaye Worthman; three sons, Robert K. Hullinger Jr, John M. Hullinger and Thomas A. Hullinger; and a sister, Roberta Rupley.
There will be no viewing or services per his request. Private family burial will take place at the Pilgram Rest Cemetery in Huntington at a later date.

Pat Peters, 71

January 7, 2011

Pat Peters, 71, a resident of Churubusco and wife of Mahlon E. Peters, passed away at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. She had been in failing health since November.
Mrs. Peters was born Feb. 13, 1939 in Swan Township in Noble County, a daughter of Ralph B. and Fae E. (Butler) Carter, Sr., and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1957.
On Nov. 12, 1960 she was married in Columbia City to Mahlon E. Peters, and lived there until moving to her present home in Churubusco in 1968.

Mary Ann Pund, 85

Mary Ann Pund, 85, a former resident of Eel River Township and widow of Charles Edward Pund, passed away at 8:43 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at the St. Anne Home in Fort Wayne.
Born in Wapakoneta, Ohio March 22, 1925, she was a daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Higgins) Kohler.
The surviving relatives include her children, James C. Pund, Keith G. Pund, Patricia Poling and Lynn Haire; and three sisters, Nelle Gault, Edith Stroh and Alice Schwer.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Father John Overmyer, officiating.

Drug charges filed in relation to infant death

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed charges today in a case related to the death of a five-month-old girl Monday morning in Columbia City.
Charges relating to the manufacture of methamphetamine were filed this morning against Travis A. Wonderly, 21 and Janel M. Creech, 36.
Both suspects were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, a Class B felony, maintaining a common nuisance, a Class D felony and possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.
According to court documents, police say the lab was in operation from Dec. 26 until Monday.

Backup plan for county's data weighed

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s information technology consultant talked about data protection this week to the county council.
Jim Becher spoke to the board about the possibility of putting in hard drives for the sole purpose of “backing up” all the data produced by the county’s various departments.
Becher also presented the less feasible option of the county going to “off-site backup.”
Becher told the board that sending the county’s computer data to an off-site storage facility in California could cost as much as $13,000 each year.
