COLUMBIA CITY — Conservation Officers have investigating a tree stand accident that occurred around 8:50 a.m. Friday morning in Whitley County.
Jason Branning, age 36, from Columbia City, was hunting from an elevated climbing stand when the cables broke free from the tree. Branning fell with his tree stand 24 feet to the ground.
He was able to call a friend who was hunting in nearby woods with his cell phone for help.
Emergency personnel from multiple agencies were on scene to assist with locating and transporting Branning out of the woods.
CHURUBUSCO – A small smoke issue brought the Churubusco-Smith Township Fire Department to Churubusco High School Sunday afternoon.
According to Chief Roger Bennett, a fan in one of the maintenance rooms near the gym overheated, causing an emission of smoke.
The department was dispatched to the scene and minor ventilation was performed to vent the smoke out of the building.
Bennett said there was no damage other than to the overheated fan.

TERRE HAUTE — A tournament that began with thousands of runners four weeks ago came to a close Saturday in Terre Haute at the IHSAA State Cross Country Meet.
Eight local harriers — Whitko’s boys’ team and Columbia City’s Samantha Roush — had the opportunity to compete against the top runners in the state.
Columbia City sophomore stand-out Samantha Roush placed the highest of Whitley County’s runners, taking seventh in the girls’ race.
Though Roush improved on last year’s 12th place finish, her goal is to continue to improve next season.

GARRETT — The Wildcats’ season hit the end of the road, or railroad for that matter, Friday night at Garrett.
After heading into the locker room with a 14-all tie at halftime, Garrett stand-out Todd Frickey scored four touchdowns in the second half to propel the Railroaders into the sectional finals, 42-14.
“We’ve always been a second half team,” Garrett Head Coach Ron Frickey, Todd’s father and former long-time Columbia City head football coach said.
CHURUBUSCO — The Churu-busco Eagles moved to 11-0 Friday for the first time in the school’s history, beating Madison-Grant 28-20.
With the win, the team is also advancing to the sectional championship at Bishop Luers.
It was one of the closest contests of the season for the Eagles.
Madison-Grant took the opening possession and matriculated down the field on the feet of Cedric Presley, who had two runs of 32 yards on the first drive.
Argyll Tyler Young scored from one-yard out, taking the lead 7-0.
Young and Presley served as workhorses the entire game.

FORT WAYNE — Richard H. Horstmeyer, 83, died at Parkview Hospital, Oct. 26, 2011.
He is a son of the late Paul and Helen Horstmeyer, born April 1, 1928, in Fort Wayne.
He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Barbara Ann (Huber) Horstmeyer; four sons Rick (Kathleen), Gregg (Joyce), Kirk, and Markus (Judy); a brother Robert Horstmeyer (Ann); nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Joyce Meyers and Carol Bair.
The funeral will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m. at Our Hope Lutheran Church, Huntertown.
Rex Charles Humbarger, 82, of Tavares, Fla., died, Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 at Florida Hospital Waterman, Tavares, Fla.
Born Nov. 21, 1928, in Celina, Ohio, he was the son of the late Noah and Hazel Humbarger.
The U.S. Army veteran was a member of Holiday Mobile Park Boat Club.
He retired in 1994 as the owner/operator of King Foods after 34 years.
