The first snow of the season fell in Whitley County Thursday afternoon. There has been minimal accumulation and light snow showers are expected throughout the night.

Columbia City and Whitko girls face off

SOUTH WHITLEY — In the last decade, Columbia City has won 10 out of 12 games against the Wildcats.
But Whitko can’t be taken lightly this season.
The Lady ’Cats have a game under their belt already, winning decisively over Central Noble Tuesday night, 63-33.
Whitko is under the direction of new head coach Brandon Bradley, who is working to get the Lady Wildcats their first winning season since 2008.
What better way to prove himself than a win over Columbia City?
The Lady Eagles competed in a scrimmage Tuesday, but have yet to get their first-game jitters out of the way.

Snow squalls usher in season at 2:09 p.m.

Break out the snowmobiles, sleds and snow shovels, the season's first snow blew into Whitley County at 2:09 p.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011.
With temperatures barely reaching 40 degrees today, a few snowflakes at 2 p.m. turned into brief but semi-heavy snow squalls throughout the afternoon. Snow was confirmed in Columbia City and South Whitley, and from radar reports undoubtedly was present throughout Whitley County.
No accumulation was reported or expected.

Whitko’s Irwin commits to Stetson; school’s all-time leading scorer headed to Division I school

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko stand-out point guard Logan Irwin is going Division I.
Irwin signed with Stetson University Wednesday, a NCAA Division I school in DeLand, Fla.
Though Florida may be unfamiliar territory for Irwin, the head coach isn’t.
With Irwin’s father, Rob, as Head Coach at Whitko, Logan has had the opportunity to get to know several basketball coaches, including former assistant coach at Belmont (University) Head Coach Casey Alexander
“I knew that my relationship with Coach Alexander was the best out of all the schools I’ve looked at,” Irwin said.

WCCS New Teacher Program succeeding

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools implemented a project last year known as the New Teacher Program.
Michelle Urban, vice principal at Indian Springs Middle School, updated the WCCS school board on the program’s progress Monday.
Urban said the goal of the program is to explore best practices, provide them with educational research and create an environment for elaboration and discussion.
The program meets once a month. Following the meeting, Urban emails an account along with questions and material for the mentors to work on with their mentees.
