According to estimates by the National Retail Association, more than 226 million shoppers spent their Black Friday (Nov. 25) either shopping in stores or going online.
More Americans than ever before were hunting for bargains over the course of the three-day weekend.
The national average of money spent was up by nearly $40, coming in at $398.

KENNEBUNK, MAINE â€” E. Lynn Wilkinson, 67, of Kennebunk, Maine, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at his residence in Kennebunk.
He was born Dec. 4, 1943, in Sturgis, Mich., the only child of Ellis Chester Wilkinson and Lillian â€śBerniceâ€ť Brown.
Following a stay in Monroe, Mich. thru the end of World War II, the family returned to the general area of Whitley County, where he graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the class of 1962.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s Lady Eagle basketball team fell to 2-5 Thursday after a loss to Bishop Dwenger.
Coumbia City lost to the Lady Saints by a score of 49-41.
Dwenger took an early 8-0 lead and continued the output.
It wasnâ€™t until Emily Whiteleather hit one of two free throws with under five minutes to go in the first quarter that Columbia City was on the scoreboard.
â€śOur slow start in the first quarter didnâ€™t help us,â€ť said Lady Eagle Head Coach Amy Shearer.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Schuyler P. VanVoorst, 90, of Columbia City, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Millerâ€™s Merry Manor where he had been a resident for the past three weeks.
He was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Etna Troy Township, a son of Dale George and Irene Erma (Haney) VanVoorst.
His formative years were spent on a farm in Etna Troy Township.
Following his graduation from Larwill High School in 1939, he began farming with his father.
On June 9, 1945, he was united in marriage to Avis I. Blanchard. They made their first home on a farm in Thorncreek Township.
