COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools has an alternative method of teaching – should it be necessary for students.
It’s known as the TROY (Teaching and Reaching Our Youth) Center, located in the former Etna-Troy school facility, 4905 N -550 W, rural Columbia City.
A student attending the center has to be referred from his or her attending school. The program is different for every individual; it can be to graduate, to continue education or to simply provide an environment to work on assignments, depending on the situation.
COLUMBIA CITY — Parkview Whitley Hospital has renewed community partnerships with four not-for-profit organizations in Whitley County, which have received a share of $55,000 in Community Health Improvement funds for 2012, according to a hospital press release.
The organizations, which meet the hospital’s guidelines for being able to work collaboratively and proactively to improve the health of the community, are: Beds & Britches, Etc. (B.A.B.E.); Community Action of Northeast Indiana (CANI); Interfaith Mission, Inc./The Lighthouse and Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana
COLUMBIA CITY — Daily she is surrounded by 130,000 books at the Peabody Public Library. Now Janet Scank is retiring and may just be able to read one for herself.
Friday is Scank’s last day as director of the PPL. She will move back to her home in Bloomington. Her goal is to finish reading a book in less than one week.
For now she’ll have time to read those John Michell historical novels or the English murder mysteries she longs for.
Scank may even have time to finish all of those biographies she’s been collecting from the Friends of the PPL bi-annual book sales throughout her tenure.
Virginia E. “Jen” Tippy, 83, of Columbia City, died at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Parkview Oaks where she had been a resident since Feb. 26, 2009.
She was born March 12, 1928, in Rochester, Indiana, a daughter of Herman and Readah (Baldwin) Cleland.
She graduated from Rochester High School.
On Oct. 8, 1949 she married Jack L. Tippy.
They made their home in Angola and North Manchester before moving to Columbia City in 1970. Mr. Tippy died July 5, 1977.

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco wrestling beat Eastside Tuesday night, 54-27.
Coming off Saturday’s win at the Northeast Corner Conference duals and Columbia City on Tuesday, the Eagles were eager to continue their win streak.
“They were ready for every match we had,” Churubusco Head Coach Sam Riesen said. “They showed a lot of heart and they fought all night.”
The Eagles won four matches by forfeit; Jacob Ferry, Clint Bechtold, Sam Siddons and Jason Nicodemus.

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County's Board of Commissioners decided this week to enter into a one-year contract with Spyglass.
Spyglass provides a research service that goes through local and long distance phone lines, fax lines, cell phone lines and internet connections to look for cost-efficiency opportunities.
The company reviews records to find out if a client is paying unnecessarily for services which either they no longer use or are being over-charged for.
Spyglass works with respective carriers who provide the service and analyzes the data to find out what if any changes can be made.
Martha L. Osbun, 83, a resident of rural Churubusco in Noble County and wife of Everett W. Osbun, passed away at 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 at her home in Green Township.
She had been in declining health for some time, and had been seriously ill for the past week.
Mrs. Osbun was born in Green Township on April 2, 1928, a daughter of Earlin R. and Mary N. (McClain) Budd. She spent her formative years north of Churubusco in Noble County, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1946.
Betty L. Rubrake McKibbin, 84, passed away Sunday, Nov. 20 at Borgess Pipp Hospital in Plainwell, Mich.
Betty was born Oct. 9, 1927, to Lawrence E. and Pearl Blew Rubrake, one of the family’s 16 children.
Betty worked as a bookkeeper for C.W. Schrader Auto in Columbia City, Grace P. Pauley Clothing Store in St. Joseph and R & M Heating & Cooling in Coloma.
Betty married Dale McKibbin on July 31, 1954, and to them was born two sons, Mark (Amy) McKibbin of Plainwell and Brian McKibbin of Muskegon.

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s swim team beat North Side decisively Tuesday night in Fort Wayne.
The boys team won 131-44 and the girls defeated the Lady Redskins 119-56.
Columbia City placed first in all 24 events.
Head Coach Kristen Swonger was pleased with the swimmers’ finishes.
“The kids did pretty well,” Swonger said. “Some of them showed a lot of improvement tonight, causing shifts to the relay teams for the next meet.”
SOUTH WHITLEY — Robert W. Craft Jr., 89, of South Whitley, died at 3:23 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne where he was admitted on Sunday.
He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Detroit, a son of Robert W. and Margaret (Allen) Craft. He graduated from high school in Detroit and continued his education.
On Sept. 14, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged Nov. 8, 1945.
On March 3, 1954, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged March 2, 1958.
