DENVER â Whitkoâs girls basketball team won its Three Rivers Conference opener at North Miami Saturday night, 64-29.
After a rough patch in their schedule (Elkhart Memorial, Northrop and Warsaw), the Lady Wildcats opened conference play with a decisive win.
âWe knew going in this was going to be a big game for us to see where we were mentally after playing those tough teams,â Whitko Head Coach Brandon Bradley said.

FORT WAYNE â After keeping Carroll from taking the lead throughout the entire regulation, the Columbia City Lady Eagles found themselves playing in overtime Saturday night in the Northeast Hoosier Conference opener.
The Lady Chargers hit a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 37 and force an extra four minutes of play.
The Lady Eagles held on to win the game, 41-38, off free throws by Sarah Opliger and Sidney Bunyan.
Bunyan led the team in scoring with nine points and also chipped in a block, steal and assist.

DENVER â Had it not been for a second quarter momentum shift, the outcome of Columbia Cityâs boys basketball game at Northfield may have been different.
The Eagles came off a 13-6 first-quarter deficit to out-score the Norsemen 26-2 in the second quarter and win 66-43.
âWe allowed them to play in their comfort zone in the first quarter,â Columbia City Head Coach Chris Benedict said. âIn the second quarter we started to pressure them with a full court press.â
TOPEKA â Churubusco Head Coach Mike McBride said the Eagle schedule to start the season is a difficult one.
It didnât get any easier Friday when âBusco traveled to Westview High School and lost to the Warriors, 47-31.
Westview player Brant Yoder, who had 17 points in the game, hit a two-pointer with just under two minutes left and âBusco went into the locker room trailing 19-11 at the half.
With 1:15 left to go in the third, LeFever fouled out of the game.
The Eagle deficit had grown even farther; the third period ended with the score 34-21 in favor of the Warriors.
According to estimates by the National Retail Association, more than 226 million shoppers spent their Black Friday (Nov. 25) either shopping in stores or going online.

KENNEBUNK, MAINE â E. Lynn Wilkinson, 67, of Kennebunk, Maine, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at his residence in Kennebunk.
He was born Dec. 4, 1943, in Sturgis, Mich., the only child of Ellis Chester Wilkinson and Lillian âBerniceâ Brown.
Following a stay in Monroe, Mich. thru the end of World War II, the family returned to the general area of Whitley County, where he graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the class of 1962.
COLUMBIA CITY â Columbia Cityâs Lady Eagle basketball team fell to 2-5 Thursday after a loss to Bishop Dwenger.
Coumbia City lost to the Lady Saints by a score of 49-41.
Dwenger took an early 8-0 lead and continued the output.
It wasnât until Emily Whiteleather hit one of two free throws with under five minutes to go in the first quarter that Columbia City was on the scoreboard.
âOur slow start in the first quarter didnât help us,â said Lady Eagle Head Coach Amy Shearer.
COLUMBIA CITY â Schuyler P. VanVoorst, 90, of Columbia City, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Millerâs Merry Manor where he had been a resident for the past three weeks.
He was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Etna Troy Township, a son of Dale George and Irene Erma (Haney) VanVoorst.
His formative years were spent on a farm in Etna Troy Township.
Following his graduation from Larwill High School in 1939, he began farming with his father.
On June 9, 1945, he was united in marriage to Avis I. Blanchard. They made their first home on a farm in Thorncreek Township.

COLUMBIA CITY â Churubusco took home the Whitley County Eaglesâ traveling trophy Wednesday night after defeating Columbia City, 42-31.
âWe figured itâd be a good meet tonight and it was,â Churubusco Head Coach Sam Riesen said. âItâs always an exciting match-up against Columbia City. We figured itâd be another good one tonight and it was.â
The trophy was introduced this season and according to Churubusco Head Coach Sam Riesen, the gold Eagle will travel between the schools.
âThey definitely deserve it,â Columbia City Head Coach Blane Culp said. âThey out-wrestled us.â
