Donna Bitting, 87

February 14, 2011

Donna M. Bitting, 87, formerly of South Whitley, died at 7:39 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at her home in Goshen.
She was born May 21, 1923 in Wabash County, a daughter of Walter V. and Cleo D. (Hite) Yentes. She attended school in Urbana and graduated from Laketon High School in 1941.
In 1951 she was united in marriage to Ralph Judy. They made their first home in North Manchester, moving to South Whitley in 1953. Mr. Judy died in 1966.
In 1967 she began working at Whitley County Memorial Hospital and in 1969 she moved to Columbia City.

Doris Pittenger, 86

Doris E. Pittenger, 86, of Columbia City, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since December 2006.
She was born Jan. 13, 1925 in Huntington, a daughter of Charles M. and Julia (Yanko) Carroll. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne where she completed her education.
On Nov. 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to Richard W. Pittenger. They made their home in Oakland, Calif. moving to Lake Tahoe in 1955 until 1980 when they returned to Columbia City. Mr. Pittenger died in 1991.

Richard Waikel, 74

Richard L. “Jingles” Waikel , 74, passed away Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Born in Ft. Wayne, Richard retired as a brick mason after 46 years with Local 4 Indiana and Kentucky. He was an avid fisherman in Columbia City and Tarpon Springs.

Mary Dellinger, 72

Mary Helen Dellinger, 72, of Columbia City, died Saturday, at 9:44 a.m. Feb. 12, 2011 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born July 6, 1938 in Monroeville, she was a daughter of Paul L. and Angnes L. (Wagner) Gramelspacher.

Survey asks: What do you want to see from your parks?

COLUMBIA CITY — In an effort to continually improve the town’s park facilities and recreational programs, the Columbia City Park Board has created a public survey in order to seek the community’s input.
“We appreciate the public’s use of the parks facilities — we encourage it,” park board president Kelley Sheiss said at the January monthly meeting. “And in doing so, we are trying to provide the best facilities with the resources we have available at this time with a limited budget.”

Larwill property returned to habitable status

LARWILL — Chief Inspector Craig Wagner with the Whitley County Planning and Building Department was in attendance at the Larwill Town Council meeting last Thursday to provide updates on the property located at 202 North Center Street.
The property was evacuated last spring due to several violations of the town’s unsafe building ordinance.
Owner of the unsafe structure is Ralph Fitch, who has been represented by Katrina Osterman

Commissioner certificate sale to be online

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s Board of Commissioners approved the county’s first Commissioners Tax Certificate sale at its regular meeting last week.
Tim Rushenburg, representing SRI Incorporated spoke to the commissioners about the sale, which will be held online in June.
“It seems like the internet sale is the way to go,” said Commissioner Don Amber.
Rushenburg told the three-man board his company would receive 15 percent of the total proceeds for a “live” sale and only 10 percent of an internet sale.

New faces take seats on boards

COLUMBIA CITY — Several new appointments to county boards were announced to the Whitley County Board of Commissioners last week.
David Sewell, Whitley County’s Building and Planning Department Executive Director, contacted the commissioners regarding a recommended new member to the county’s Board of Zoning Appeals.
“I would like to recommend Tim Denihan as a citizen member of the Whitley County Board of Zoning Appeals,” said Sewell in a letter to the three-man board.

Leesburg man faces charges

COLUMBIA CITY — The Leesburg man arrested last week on drug charges following a car chase with law enforcement was in court Monday morning.
Roger Shreve, 52 is charged with dealing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, driving while suspended and resisting law enforcement by fleeing following an incident that began with a police-monitored drug buy Feb. 7.

Four injured in Saturday crash

LARWILL — Four people were injured in a single-car crash Saturday in Larwill.
According to Indiana State Police, a sport utility vehicle driven by Thu Aung Myo Si, 24, of Rock Island, Ill. rolled from the eastbound lanes of U.S. 30 near County Road 550 W. and ended up on all four wheels in the westbound lane.
During the accident, San San Myint, 55, also of Rock Island, was ejected.
Myint and Myo Si were both flown by Samaritan Hospital to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne where their conditions are unknown.
