February 16th
COLUMBIA CITY — Concerned citizens can view the third incarnation of Whitley County’s newest comprehensive plan during an open house today, according to the county’s Building and Planning Department.
Dave Sewell, the department’s executive director said last month there have been few changes between the plan’s second and third draft, citing mostly semantics, grammatical and spelling changes, adding the most notable changes stemmed from public input meetings and involved windmills.
Sewell said the public comments have pertained to wind energy, turbines and alternative energy devices.
Leonard P. “Lenny” Williams, 77, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:25 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at his residence. Born June 16, 1933 in Clinton, Ohio, he was a son of Charles E. and Margaret E. (Carr) Williams.
He lived in Carrollton, Ohio until 1956 and Fort Wayne from 1956-1993 before moving to Columbia City. He graduated from Clinton High School with the Class of 1951, Clinton, Ohio and attended Indiana Tech.
Deborah K. Killian, 54, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011 at her residence on Crooked Lake. Born July 19, 1956 in Lebanon, Ind., she was a daughter of William E. Zollars and Ruth A. (Greeson) Remley.
Steven Bruce Hawk, 50, of Morning Sun, Iowa, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 14, 2011, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. A son of Bert and Shirley Carroll Hawk, he was born March 22, 1960 in Ft. Wayne. He married Tammy L. Spitznogle April 28, 2000 in Wapello, Iowa.
He was an over-the-road truck driver having last worked for Adrian Trucking out of Richland, Iowa. Steven loved sports, his time with his family (especially grandchildren) video games and movies.
Virginia Rose Wiseman, 82, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born May 9, 1928 in Fort Wayne, she was a daughter of Roland “Victor” Phend and Hazlette (Brubaker) Ferguson.
Naaman E. Van Meter, 38, of Larwill, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at Goshen General Hospital in Goshen. He was born Aug. 31, 1972 in Warsaw to Thomas E. and Judy E. (Carey) Van Meter.
Survivors include his parents; five sisters, Hope Lightner, Rebekah Eisner, Elanna Moeller, Christine Van Meter and Larissa Phillips; one brother, Ryan Van Meter; and grandparents, Larry and Hulleta Carey.

After an exit earlier than they expected, Columbia City girls’ basketball got some good news Monday to lift the spirits of four Lady Eagle seniors.
The Northeast Hoosier Conference announced its all-conference teams for the 2010-11 season. Among them, Columbia City (12-10, 1-6) landed four starters within the various team selections.
For first-year head coach Amy Shearer, it’s some comfort at the end of a 12-10 season.
February 14th
Donna M. Bitting, 87, formerly of South Whitley, died at 7:39 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at her home in Goshen.
She was born May 21, 1923 in Wabash County, a daughter of Walter V. and Cleo D. (Hite) Yentes. She attended school in Urbana and graduated from Laketon High School in 1941.
In 1951 she was united in marriage to Ralph Judy. They made their first home in North Manchester, moving to South Whitley in 1953. Mr. Judy died in 1966.
In 1967 she began working at Whitley County Memorial Hospital and in 1969 she moved to Columbia City.
Doris E. Pittenger, 86, of Columbia City, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since December 2006.
She was born Jan. 13, 1925 in Huntington, a daughter of Charles M. and Julia (Yanko) Carroll. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne where she completed her education.
On Nov. 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to Richard W. Pittenger. They made their home in Oakland, Calif. moving to Lake Tahoe in 1955 until 1980 when they returned to Columbia City. Mr. Pittenger died in 1991.
Richard L. “Jingles” Waikel , 74, passed away Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Born in Ft. Wayne, Richard retired as a brick mason after 46 years with Local 4 Indiana and Kentucky. He was an avid fisherman in Columbia City and Tarpon Springs.
