Intersection to get safety feature

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbia City’s lone representative in the Indiana Senate has spearheaded a campaign designed to make one of Whitley County’s most harrowing intersections a little safer.
Freshman Sen. Jim Banks R-Columbia City reported this week that officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation plan to install “rumble strips,” or traffic control devices that produce an audible vibration for motorists, at the intersection of U.S. 30 and state Route 205.

South Whitley police find meth lab

COLUMBIA CITY — Police in South Whitley, assisted by the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police, parlayed a routine traffic stop into the discovery of yet another methamphetamine lab in Whitley County.
According to a press release from the Whitley County Drug Task Force, South Whitley Deputy Marshall Chuck LeWallen conducted a traffic stop on Isaiah A. Neer, 26 of South Whitley.

Court tells man to stop stalling

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Circuit Court Judge James Heuer told a man suspected of child molesting he would have to quit dragging his feet and face trial.
“This case will be tried on the court’s schedule, not on yours,” said Heuer to Ronald A. Rostochak in court Feb. 22.
Rostochak has been awaiting trial for child molesting, a Class A felony and sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class B felony, since late 2009.
Since then, the court has granted Rostochak several continuances for pre-trial conferences and trials and Rostochak himself has been represented by five different attorneys.

Double take: ’Cats clip Panthers, again

   SYRACUSE — What a difference four days and a healthy team makes.
   After downing the NorthWood Panthers by a 51-44 margin Friday night, the Whitko Wildcats squared off against the same Panthers in Tuesday night’s opening contest of the class 3A Wawasee sectional.
   With the team at full strength, the Wildcats used a smothering defense and hit 22-of-25 free throws to advance with a dominating 61-45 win.
