COLUMBIA CITY â Linbeth Doggendorfâs voice was barely audible as she gushed about the daughter she lost more than a year ago.
Her testimony could barely be heard in a courtroom with bad acoustics, compounded by her soft-spoken nature and muffled further by the sobs of friends and family.
âItâs turned our world upside down,â she said. âNothing is the same. Everythingâs not right anymore.â
COLUMBIA CITY â A second arrest was made this week in connection with the explosion of a suspected meth lab in a rural Whitley County mobile home park that killed a woman in December of last year.
Joshua B. Angus, 25, of Fort Wayne was arrested and charged Monday with four counts stemming from the Dec. 3, 2010 explosion that killed 24-year-old Alecia Stine at Miami Village Trailer Park on Old Trail Road east of Columbia City.
A second man, Wade Burns, was charged in February.
CHURUBUSCO — Dylan Herendeen and Jordan Turner hung up their basketball shoes for bats and sunflower seeds, kicking off Churubusco’s baseball season in prime fashion Tuesday.
The pair of seniors worked together to post a 1-0 shutout against Leo.
Herendeen controlled the defensive side taking Leo out of its offense.
The senior lefty posted nine strikeouts and two outs by rundowns in the first and third innings. Herendeen threw a complete seven-inning shutout at the mound.
SOUTH WHITLEY — It’s only March and Whitko track and field may have already had its biggest test in the Three Rivers Conference.
Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats faced the team that has kept them from a TRC title the past two seasons.
Despite winning eight events, Wabash couldn’t match the depth of the Lady Wildcats.
Whitko served up the first blow of the season beating Wabash 62-52 before the two teams meet again in the TRC meet May 12.
SOUTH WHITLEY — The best offense was a good pitcher Tuesday for Whitko softball.
Opening the 2011 season at home, the Lady Wildcats took a 5-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning against Oak Hill.
After the tying run reached base, Whitko’s Karissa Olinske clinched the win forcing three consecutive outs. She had six strikeouts on the night.
Olinske, or ‘O’ as they like to call her, added to the Whitko offense recording a triple.
SOUTH WHITLEY — It’s baseball’s opening week and Whitko had no time to warm up.
Monday, the Wildcats faced the best class 3A has to offer in their season opener. Preseason No. 1-ranked New Haven traveled to South Whitley.
For three innings, Whitko held its ground against the Bulldogs trailing 1-0.
A four-run fourth inning turned the gears for New Haven. The Bulldogs went on to win 8-1, holding the Wildcats to two hits for the game.
Churubusco swept a home meet Monday night against Northfield. The Lady Eagles topped the Lady Norsemen 115--17 while the Eagles beat Northfield 98-34. COESSE â For someone who bets on horses, the odds of twin foals being born alive and healthy to a healthy mare are staggeringly slim. Most websites say 1 in 10,000 are twin pregnancies and only 9 percent of those are carried to term.
But in Coesseâs Conley and Koontz Equine Hospital, a 16-year-old Paint/Pinto mare named Lilâ Miss Boutique, âTiki,â beat those odds, delivering a colt and a filly over the weekend.
Delbert (Dean) Weilacher, 67 of North Hollywood, Calif., passed away March 8, 2011 at Northridge Hospital in Northridge, Calif. of complications from pneumonia. He was born March 5, 1944 to Delbert and Grace (Manago) Weilacher in Fort Wayne.
Edith J. Beard, 99, of Columbia City, died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Millerâs Merry Manor where she had been a resident since April 2005.
She was born Nov. 26, 1911 in Whitley County, a daughter of William R. and Elsie (Fisher) Hively. Her formative years were spent in Thorncreek Township where she attended the Hoops School. She completed her education at Columbia City High School.
On Sept. 29, 1928 she was united in marriage to Alva C. Beard. They made their home in Larwill until 1942 when they moved to Columbia City. Mr. Beard died Feb. 12, 1982.
