Fairgrounds wall to come tumbling down

Looking ahead to the 4-H Fair, the Whitley County Fairboard met Tuesday for the monthly meeting ready to make decisions.
The first work day earlier this month was deemed a success as board president Bill Leeuw said the section of unsafe bleachers came down in just two and a half hours thanks in part to Joe and Lee Bowser from National Wreck Systems who came ready with torches. They will return on the next work day to help put up the new bleachers.

Danny Bolinger, 56

April 14, 2011

Danny Lee Bolinger, 56, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born Dec. 11, 1954 in Huntington, he was a son of Bill D. and Marylyn J. (Geiger) Bolinger.
A lifetime Columbia City resident, he graduated with the Class of 1973 from Columbia City Joint High School. On May 21, 1977 he married Michelle Trimmer at First Church of God, Columbia City. For 28 years, he worked as a welder for Dana Corporation, Syracuse.

Frederick Gaff, 64

Frederick G.C. Gaff, 64, of Churubusco, passed away at 11:58 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at his residence. Born Oct. 31, 1946 in Wolf Lake, he was a son of Paul Joseph and Joyce N. (Newman) Gaff.

Donald “Tod” Pressler, 81

Donald J. “Tod” Pressler, 81, a resident of Churubusco, passed away unexpectedly at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at the family residence, from the results of an apparent heart attack.

Grand ’Cat walks ’Busco off

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko had its errors, saw a deficit all night, but on one swing erased all of that.
   Battling back for a second time from a two-run Churubusco lead, the Wildcats loaded the bases tied 5-5 in the seventh inning for senior Josh Pratt.
   Needing just one run for the win, Pratt cleared the bases with a walk-off grand slam shot clearing the 343-yard centerfield fence for the win 9-5.

Works board to get early start

COLUMBIA CITY — An Indianapolis meeting regarding the upcoming state Route 205 Project was going to make it necessary for the Columbia City Board of Works and Safety to meet earlier this week.
The meeting didn’t materialize, however, the board will still meet at 7 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. Friday to afford Mayor Jim Fleck the ability to make another meeting at the state capital.

Freshman’s debut puts City in win column

   GARRETT — Two Voddes are better than one.
   Wednesday night, freshman Allie Vodde followed her older sister Cassie Vodde’s footsteps as a Lady Eagles pitcher.
   The young Vodde made her debut on the mound allowing just three hits in a 9-0 shutout win at Garrett.

Lady ’Cats tagged out by West Noble 7-1

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko softball dropped to 2-2 on the season after Wednesday night.
   The Lady Wildcats fell to West Noble at home 7-1.

WCCS teachers take one for team in new deal

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Consolidated School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees took less than five minutes for a special meeting Tuesday to ratify a new deal with the local teachers union.
The board met in special session Tuesday, less than one week before what may be a pivotal meeting pertaining to the budget.

’Busco left in dust 13-2

Churubusco’s Kasey Gibson slides in at home against Manchester Wednesday at home. The Lady Eagles fell to 0-2 on the season falling to the Lady Squires 13-2.
