Tuesday sports schedule washed out, Wednesday cancelations

   Heavy rain and thunderstorms across northern Indiana canceled high school sports for Whitley County schools Tuesday and Wednesday.
   For Wednesday, Columbia City baseball and softball are canceled due to wet conditions. Whitko girls' tennis will be moved to May 4 at home against Rochester. Also canceled are: Lady Wildcats varsity and junior varsity softball and junior varsity baseball.

Local teacher follows Anne Frank's footsteps

COLUMBIA CITY — Michelle Ball, a teacher at Pierceton Elementary School, retraced the footsteps of Anne Frank and her family, thanks to a Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship Grant that she received last year.
Ball spent 47 days in Europe last summer. She traveled throughout Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands, visiting places where Frank spent her life, and learning Jewish history dating back to the 12th century. She deepened her experiences there to further understand what makes the Holocaust such a tragic human event, as well as a distinct genocide.

Mary C. Skinner, 86

Mary Catherine Skinner, age 86, of Albion passed away at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2011 at North Ridge Village Nursing Home, Albion. Born November 6, 1924 in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Robert Franklin and Tacy Bernice (Hill) Baker.
A resident of Whitley and Noble counties, she graduated from Wolf Lake High School. On June 29, 1947 she was united in marriage to Bernard G. Skinner by Rev. Marion Shroyer in Columbia City.

Nellene K. Miller, 60, of rural Churubusco, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted on Monday, April 11th.
She was born Dec. 21, 1950 in Wolf Lake, Indiana a daughter of Byron H. and Laura M. (Gump) Miller. Her formative years were spent in Etna Township, Whitley County. She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School.
She was employed at Viking in Columbia City and B.R.C. in Churubusco.
As a young girl, she attended West Etna Community Church.

Spring cleanup dates in Columbia City are June 11 and 18, according to clerk-treasurer Rosie Coyle. West side cleanup will be on June 11 and east side on June 18.
