COLUMBIA CITY — Water Pollution Control Facility Superintendent Mike Cook reported to the Columbia City Board of Works about his facility’s new lights.
The lights, ultra-violet bulbs that play a key role in the cleaning process of treated sewage before it leaves the sewage plant, were being installed in increments after being purchased earlier this year.
“All the bulbs have been installed and when they (inspectors) sample today, we have to be in compliance,” Cook said.
“We shouldn’t have any troubles this year.”
COLUMBIA CITY — City wastewater officials have had their hands full lately at a local housing development.
At the Friday meeting of Columbia City’s Board of Works and Safety, Water Pollution Control Facility Superintendent Mike Cook reported a recurring problem with a city sewer lift station at Irish Glen.
According to Cook, pumps at the lift station are being clogged by an as-yet unidentified obstruction.
“We’ve always had an issue out there but this year it’s been unbelievable,” Cook said.
“Today (Friday) will be the third time this week we’ve had an issue out there,” he said.
COLUMBIA CITY — An employee of the South Whitley Public Library was seriously injured Friday in a three-vehicle crash in Starke County, according to Starke County police.
Virginia Doenges, 76 of South Whitley suffered a severe injury to her right leg after the vehicle she was driving crashed into a semi-tractor trailer driven by Charles Peterson of Dysart, Iowa.
The accident occurred at about 7:23 p.m. near the Grovertown Truck Stop on U.S. 30 in Starke County.
COLUMBIA CITY — A presentation by a representative of a wind energy company will highlight the agenda of the Whitley County Council this week.
A joint meeting of the Whitley County Council and the Whitley County Board of Commissioners was canceled, according to Whitley County Auditor Jen McGuire.
“They (the commissioners) decided not to have it yet because they’re not ready to talk about it yet,” she said, referring to a budget discussion for the county’s Emergency Medical Service.
COLUMBIA CITY — City officials are responding to several letters in The Post & Mail accusing the city police, and in particular one mayoral candidate, of waste of government funds.
Letters submitted to the newspaper referenced a perceived misuse of a city police vehicle by mayoral candidate Gary Parrett.
The letter writers M.K. Meeks and local attorney Terry Smith accuse Parrett of driving a police car to his local restaurant while on sick leave from the police department.
Margaret L. Menzie, 100, of Pierceton, went to be with the Lord at 7:10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011 in Grace Village Healthcare Center, Winona Lake.
The daughter of Carl and Cleo Earnhart, she was born March 12, 1911 in Cromwell. She married Howard Menzie Oct. 21, 1947 in Fort Wayne. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Margaret grew up on a farm near Pierceton. She lived nearly her whole life in the Pierceton area. She graduated from Pierceton High School and also attended Cummins School for elementary school, which was a one-room school northeast of Pierceton.
Michael R. Downs, 65, a resident of rural Churubusco, passed away at 12:43 a.m. Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City.
He was born Nov. 3, 1945 in Fort Wayne, a son of Archie O. and Clara M. (Wells) Downs.
The surviving relatives include his wife Patricia (Fitch) Downs; two sons, Nicholas Downs and Dustin Downs; and a sister, Melody Plummer.
Eleanor E. Galligher, 83, a former resident near Wolf Lake and widow of Kenneth H. “Bud” Galligher, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.
She was born in Fort Wayne July 29, 1927, a daughter of Ellsworth and Grace O. (Brinkman) Galbreath.
Among the surviving relatives are her children, Judy Reed, Linda Mason, Barbara Molessa, Karen Nuttle, Patricia Oswald, Kenneth Galligher, Michael Galligher and Steven Galligher.
William L. Kimmel, 80, a resident of rural Churubusco in Allen County, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011, in the emergency room at DeKalb Memorial Hospital in Auburn.
He was born in Noble County May 14, 1930, a son of George A. and Effa (Owen) Kimmel. He served with the United States Army.
The surviving relatives include his wife, Bonnie L. Leazier; four daughters, Lee Ann Schortgen, Lisa Nicole, Lynn Patrick and Lori Krueckeberg; three sisters, Barbara Rider, Midge Marshall and Lalia Hand.
