Nov. 6, 1924 — April. 17, 2011
Mary Catherine Skinner, age 86, of Albion passed away at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2011 at North Ridge Village Nursing Home, Albion. Born November 6, 1924 in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Robert Franklin and Tacy Bernice (Hill) Baker.
A resident of Whitley and Noble counties, she graduated from Wolf Lake High School. On June 29, 1947 she was united in marriage to Bernard G. Skinner by Rev. Marion Shroyer in Columbia City.
Dec. 21, 1950 — Apr. 17, 2011
Nellene K. Miller, 60, of rural Churubusco, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted on Monday, April 11th.
She was born Dec. 21, 1950 in Wolf Lake, Indiana a daughter of Byron H. and Laura M. (Gump) Miller. Her formative years were spent in Etna Township, Whitley County. She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School.
She was employed at Viking in Columbia City and B.R.C. in Churubusco.
As a young girl, she attended West Etna Community Church.
Spring cleanup dates in Columbia City are June 11 and 18, according to clerk-treasurer Rosie Coyle. West side cleanup will be on June 11 and east side on June 18.

COLUMBIA CITY — Everything about Monday night was cold.
Columbia City and Churubusco didn’t only find themselves battling each other on the baseball diamond but the bone-chilling weather as well.
Temperatures leveling off around 40 degrees didn’t help to make a county rivalry anymore heated.
COLUMBIA CITY — Monday night’s cold blustery weather wasn’t the only inhospitable thing at the DeVol Field tennis courts. The Columbia City Lady Eagle tennis squad was not the model host as they shut out visiting Whitley County rival Churubusco 5-0.
I think we played fairly well for a Monday night match,” Columbia City head coach Katie Myers said. “Most of the girls kept focused on their matches.”
SOUTH WHITLEY — It took five innings for Whitko’s baseball team to heat up their bats in the nearly freezing temperatures Monday against West Noble.
However, after two innings of scoring, the ’Cats won 6-1.
COLUMBIA CITY — A longtime problem with waste disposal in the tiny unincorporated town of Coesse is one step closer to a solution after having recently taken a tiny step backward.
For the second time since late last year, the Whitley County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application for community development.
“We had a technicality that we had to address with our procurement process,” said consultant Lori Shipman Monday afternoon.
COLUMBIA CITY — The aprons were on. The serving tongs were drawn, but something was missing.
Where was the three-year reigning champion cook-off team lead by the fearless Sen. Gary “Doc” Dillon?
They were seated in the Church of God auditorium, with nary a drop of sweat on their brows, enjoying the meal with the 400 other The Center for Whitley County Youth Benefit Cook-off feasters.
“We coulda wupped them this year,” said Bob Addison, the master chef behind their previous successes.

Gregory Mapps, 58, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, April 15, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City.
Born in Fort Wayne, Gregory worked as a national chain manager with Gordon Food Services for 22 years.
He was an executive board member for The Lighthouse homeless shelter in Columbia City. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends on the lake and out on his boat. He loved to water ski, golf, and perform his own lawn maintenance.
He also participated in the Fire and Ice Carving Festival in Columbia City.
