The beginning of the week didn’t come with the busy start local softball teams were hoping for Monday.
Severe storms passed through the area delaying the start of IHSAA sectional tournaments.
The opening round had both Columbia City and Churubusco playing games at 5 p.m.
Those games will be picked up today.
Columbia City will open its own class 3A sectional against West Noble at Morsches Park.
One Lady Eagle stood alone for Columbia City softball Monday.
As softball sectional tournaments get underway today, the Lady Eagles will have an all-conference pitcher on the mound.
Junior Cassie Vodde was one of two pitchers named to the first team in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.

One of the best seasons in Columbia City girls’ tennis history was recognized by the Northeast Hoosier Conference Monday.
After going 13-6 overall and grabbing third-place in the NHC, the Lady Eagles had four of their own named to the all-conference squad.

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s envoy to the Indiana Senate says Gov. Mitch Daniels made an impact on the U.S. Presidential race, even though his hat was never officially thrown into the ring.
“Governor Daniels would have brought what is desperately needed on the national stage — fiscal sanity,” said Sen. Jim Banks, R-Columbia City.

COLUMBIA CITY — Another candidate has joined the race for Columbia City mayor, making the ballot for November’s mayoral election a three-candidate affair.
Scott Wise filed paperwork Saturday to be the Libertarian party’s candidate for Columbia City’ top elected spot.

Helen M. Whaley, 100, widow of Waldo Whaley, died Friday, May 20, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City. Born Jan. 21, 1911 in Steuben County, she was a daughter of the late Morris W. and Anna L. (Goodrich) Hanson.
Survivors include a son, Lee (Pat) Whaley of South Whitley.
At Mrs. Whaley’s request there will be no visitation or service. Burial will be at a later date at Jamestown Cemetery in Steuben County.
Brent William Bartol, 43, of Columbia City, died unexpectedly at 2:45 p.m., Friday, May 20, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital Emergency Room, Columbia City. Born May 5, 1968, he was a son of William C. and Nancy A. (Stoll) Bartol.
Born in Fort Wayne, he graduated from Snider High School with the Class of 1987. He attended Ivy Tech Community College where he studied computer science. He worked as a service technician and technician manager for office equipment. He attended Columbia City United Methodist Church and was a member of the National Rifle Association.
Nelson W. Keister, 89, of Columbia City (Tri-Lakes), died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the home of his son. He was born Nov. 25, 1921 in Merriam to the late Albert and Gertrude (Addis) Keister.
FORT WAYNE — The ending wasn’t ideal to one of the best seasons Columbia City girls’ tennis has ever had.
Friday, the Lady Eagles saw a 5-0 loss end a 13-win season in the semifinal round of the Homestead sectional to No. 25 state ranked Fort Wayne Canterbury.

COLUMBIA CITY — In almost perfect weather Saturday, 57 runners competed in Tinkham’s Trail Run at Camp Whitley.
The overall male and female winners managed to keep the hardware in the family.
The overall male winner was Homestead High School freshman Sam Moore while the overall female winner was his sister, Abby Moore. Sam finished the tough 5K course in 20:54. Abby covered the course in 25:56.
