COLUMBIA CITY â As belts get tighter and budgets begin to squeak in the wake of a staggering economic downturn several years running, municipalities are feeling the crunch like everyone else.
And, as is the case with Columbia City, the war on terror joins the economy as a reason for some city departments that are stretched to the limit.

Churubusco senior sprinter Kyle Mathewson bursts down the track in the 100-meter dash NECC preliminary race Tuesday. Friday night, Mathewson entered the finals of the 100 with the fastest qualifying time and won the conference title. Mathewson went on to win not only the 100 but also took the 200 and the long jump with ’Busco winning the team title. SOUTH WHITLEY — Normally, a pitcher throwing a no-hitter through four innings with three runs and four hits in support could expect to have a fairly comfortable lead.
That, however, was not the case for the Whitko Lady Wildcats in their contest with Whitley County rival Churubusco.
Six hit batters and six Wildcat errors gave the visiting Eagles a 13-6 win on a rainy Friday night.
SOUTH WHITLEY — A heavy downpour of rain added an extra element to a Whitley County rivalry Friday as Whitko played host to Columbia City.
Despite being out hit by the Eagles, the Wildcats fought through wet conditions to win the home game 6-3.

COLUMBIA CITY â Columbia City High School seniors will be led by two young ladies this year.
Alexandria Kathleen Dryer, daughter of Jeff and Sharon Dryer of Columbia City achieved valedictorian status for the 2011 graduating class and Hei Lam âMayâ Cheng, daughter of Ray and Amy Cheng of Columbia City ranked salutatorian.
âWe were tied for second at the beginning of the year,â said Cheng in a dual interview with Dryer Thursday.
It was the weight of the Advanced Placement classes that separated the top three students in the final rankings.
Theo J. Thomas, 84, of Syracuse, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born Jan. 25, 1927 in Wolf Lake to Carlton L. and Edna (Galloway) Thomas.
Survivors include a daughter, Beckie Thomas; a son, Carl (Becky) Thomas of Mishawaka; a brother, DeWitt Thomas, and lifetime companion, Phyllis Weaver.
Chelsea Patricia Solliday, 19, of New Hope, Ala., passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011.
Born Nov. 2, 1991, she was a daughter of James Solliday and Denise H. (Jody) Schaffer,
Besides her parents, survivors include a son, Cameron Solliday; grandmother, Patricia Bradlow; sister, Wendy Estelle; three uncles, Geoff (Cheryl) Hoch, Christian Hoch and Bradley (Holly) Solliday; an aunt, Tammy (Paul) Solliday-Burris; a great-uncle, William Beckman; and cousins, Autum Solliday and John Solliday.
Hazel L. Hartley, 96, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Sycamore Village, Fort Wayne. Born May 28, 1914 in Mercer County, Pa., she was a daughter of Charles and Emma (Miller) Musselman.
She lived in Allen and Noble counties until moving to Florida and then returned to Whitley County. She married Ralph âJackâ Hartley. She worked for Fort Wayne Community Schools at Lakeside School as a cook.
WABASH — For the athletes on Whitko’s boys track and field team, there hasn’t been a season where they haven’t been a champion.
Thursday, the Wildcats set out to meet their biggest goal of the year.
A four-peat.

CHURUBUSCO — It’s been a long uphill battle for Brent Owen.
Injury setbacks have put his baseball future into question at times.
Thursday, Owen fought through those areas of concern to get back to what he knows best.

The senior slinger made just his third start of the season against Westview at home.
