Quick decision by deputy spawns collision

COLUMBIA CITY — A snap decision by a sheriff’s deputy Tuesday was the cause of a two-car collision that totaled a squad car, but caused no injuries, according to police.
According to squad car camera footage, Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Lewis was southbound on Ind. 9 just south of U.S. 30 at approximately 10:30 p.m. when he saw a car with a headlight out.

Danny Smith, 74

Danny B. Smith, 74, of Ligonier, died Sunday, June 12, 2011 at his residence.
He was born Jan. 17, 1937 to John T. and Ethel (Pepple) Smith in Wawaka.
On June 16, 1956, he married Shirley L. Altimus in Green Center. She preceded him in death April 25, 2011.
Mr. Smith was a lifetime area farmer and had worked as a mechanic for Truelove Brothers of Albion, J.A. Miller and Son of Wakarusa, and Noble County Highway Dept.
He is survived by three children, Bill Smith of Wawaka, Judy Reeve of Ligonier, and Bob Smith of LaGrange; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Ellsworth Jacobs, 87

FORT WAYNE — Ellsworth “Bud” R. Jacobs, 87, passed away Monday, June 13, 2011 in Fort Wayne.
Born in Fort Wayne, he worked as a supervisor with Dana Corporation for 35 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a member of Dana Quarter Century Club and was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors.
He enjoyed NASCAR and building race cars.

Kathleen Swoverland, 94

CHURUBUSCO — Kathleen “Katie” Swoverland, 94, of Churubusco, passed away at 6:06 p.m. June 13, 2011, at Heritage Park Nursing Home, after a long illness.
She was born to Clarence and Clara (Dodson) Carriger Aug. 30, 1916 in Churubusco, where she spent her formative years.
Following her graduation from Indianapolis Methodist College, she spent her career working at several different hospitals as a Registered Nurse, her last being the Linvill Hospital in Columbia City, before retiring in 1966.
She married Donald F. Swoverland Aug. 6, 1938.

Gearldine Growcock, 95

COLUMBIA CITY — Gearldine Z. Growcock, 95, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at her residence.
Born Nov. 20, 1915 in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Jesse Benjamin and Lillie Francis (Prough) Zeigler.
She lived all her life in the Whitley County area and spent 16 winters in Florida.
She attended Churubusco High School and on Feb. 23, 1935, she was married to Albert C. Growcock in Columbia City, by Pastor Cecil R. Smith.

Barney Bumbaugh, 78

NORTH MANCHESTER — Barney Martin Bumbaugh, 78, died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at 9:10 p.m. in his North Manchester home.
He was born April 19, 1933 in Warsaw to Girrard M. “Judd” and Ethel F. (Deerwester) Bumbaugh.
On Nov. 13, 1954, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Jo McDonald.
Bumbaugh served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957 as an electrician with the 91st Field Maintenance.
For the past seven years he’s lived in North Manchester.
He worked at Dana Corporation for 32 years as a tool grinder, retiring in 1995.

Jean L. Stoner, 84

SOUTH WHITLEY— JEAN L. STONER, 84, a resident of South Whitley died at 2:05 a.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011 in the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
She was born Jan. 27, 1927 in Whitley County, a daughter of George Harold and Velma M. Gale Kreider. She completed her education in the South Whitley High School.
Her first marriage was to Robert Karst and they spent their married life in Columbia City and South Whitley.
On Jan. 27, 1950, she was united in marriage to Wade Stoner and they spent their married life in the South Whitley community. Mr. Stoner died March 10, 2004.

Larry Lieberenz, 66

KIMMELL — Larry Lieberenz, 66, of Kimmell, died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Parkview Hospital.
Lieberenz was born to Joe and Gladis (Mower) Lieberenz July 4, 1944 in Fort Wayne.
He spent most of his formative years in Fort Wayne before moving to Cromwell and settled in the Wolf Lake area in 1978.
Lieberenz is survived by his daughter, Tina Lieberenz of Shipshewana; two sons, Larry Jr. and Ricky Lieberenz.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gerald Birch, 84

KENDALLVILLE — Gerald E. “Gene” Birch, age 84 of Ligonier died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.
He was born to Charlie and Susie (Rarick) Birch in Wolf Lake. He married Violet “June” Poff in 1963, who preceded him in death in 2005. He later married Jean Parks in 2008, she survives.
Birch served in the U.S. Army during WW II and retired from Monsanto in Ligonier after more than 26 years of service. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #836 in Goshen.

Paul Wysong, 85

COLUMBIA CITY — Paul E. Wysong, 85, formerly of rural Noble County died at 12:10 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2011 at Harbour Assisted Living, Fort Wayne where he had been a resident for the last four years.
He was born June 27, 1925 at Luckey Hospital, Wolf Lake, the son of the late Robert E. and Ruth (Gandy) Wysong. He spent his formative years in the Wolf Lake area and graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1943.
