William Steffey, 85

FORT WAYNE — William W. Steffey, 85, a resident of rural Avilla and long-time Noble County farmer, died at 7:50 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
He was born April 17, 1926 in Mankato, Minn., a son of Vern J. and Maude (Neuhouser) Steffey.
He married Mary Leslie in 1957. She preceded him in death in 1986.
Surviving relatives include his partner, Gail M. Olson of Avilla; two children Andrew J. Steffey of Albion and Cindy Chalfant of Land-O-Lakes, Fla; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Marilyn Murphy, 82

COLUMBIA CITY — Marilyn M. Heidenreich Murphy, 82, of Columbia City, died at 3:23 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Hospice Home, Fort Wayne where she was admitted on July 7th.
She was born Aug. 4, 1928 in Whitley County, a daughter of Kenneth E. and Mary A. (Mathias) Magley.
Her formative years were spent in Columbia City. She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1946.

Ray McNeal, 78

Ray W. McNeal, 78, a resident of Wolf Lake, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011, at North Ridge Village Nursing Home in Albion.
McNeal was born May 11, 1933 in Green Township in Noble County, a son of Ernest E. and Mable (Kichler) McNeal.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1906 in Columbia City.
On June 21, 1952 he married Marilyn F. Hopkins. She preceded him in death July 29, 1999.

Nancy Reese, 60

Nancy Jo Reese, 60, of Andrews, passed away at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at her home.
Nancy was born May 1, 1951 in Huntington to Rolland and Eloise Hutchings Reese.
Her parents preceded her in death. She was employed as a caregiver and secretary.
Her many joys included being near the water, taking care of her birds, gardening, quilting, delighting over her grandchildren who called her “Nana” or Grandma. She also enjoyed spending time with David, the love her of life.

Ruth McClain, 92

COLUMBIA CITY — Ruth C. McClain, 92, of Columbia City, died at 8:35 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Allen Bower, with whom she had been staying.
She was born Aug. 18, 1918 in Whitley County, a daughter of Loren Frank and Philena Isabel (Brubaker) Hodson.
Her formative years were spent in Columbia Township.
She graduated from Coesse High School and completed her nursing training at Washington Blvd. Hospital in Chicago.

Jean Horn, 85

Jean C. Horn, 85, of Ft. Wayne, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2011.
Born June 10, 1926 in Huntington, Jean graduated from Huntington Township High School, attended Purdue University and was the first woman accepted into General Electric’s Electrical Engineering Program.
Along with her husband Carl Horn, they were founders of Indiana Auto Auction where she actively worked for more than 40 years.
She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
Jean enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, rock collecting, and watching baseball.

Jeanette Castle, 80

Jeanette E. Castle, 80, of Fort Wayne, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at her residence.
Born Feb. 2, 1931, in Monroeville, she retired in 2001 from Marshall Fields, formerly Hudson’s, as a sales lady, after 20 years.
She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.

Judith Kellogg, 70

Judith Kellogg, 70, a resident of Churubusco, died at 5:52 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011.
She was born in Fort Wayne Aug. 19, 1940 to Eric and Dorothy (Branstrator) Lindquist.
On Sept. 1, 1959, she married Charles E. Kellogg, Sr.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Charles E. Kellogg, Jr. of Fort Wayne, David E. Kellogg of Fort Wayne, and Matthew L. Kellogg of Churubusco; a daughter Elizabeth K. Kellogg of Fort Wayne; a brother Eric Lindquist, Jr. of Fort Wayne; and two grandsons.
She was preceded by her parents.

Larwill mulls sewer woes

LARWILL — The sewer budget and current maintenance issues were addressed at the Larwill town council meeting Thursday evening as one pump recently malfunctioned, according to sewer maintenance manager Larry Sechrist.
“I called Roto-Rooter, and cloth and (baby) wipes stopped it (pump),” Sechrist said.
