Final launch: CCJHS grad's career reaches crossroad with final shuttle launch

CAPE CANAVERAL — As the world watched history unfold with the swan song Space Shuttle voyage recently, one local woman, who’d been a part of the monumental program since its inaugural flight nearly three decades ago, witnessed the closing of a chapter in her life she will not soon forget.
For 28 years a Columbia City native has worked in the shuttle program. Dawn (Smith) Meyer graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1978.

Meth death suspect gets 16 years

COLUMBIA CITY — The second man connected with the death of a local woman in a meth explosion will serve 16 years in jail.
Wade Burns, 22, was sentenced Monday to six years for reckless homicide and received 12 years, two of those suspended, for attempting to manufacture methamphetamine.

Shade and Shannon perform in South Whitley

Musicians Shade Jonze (Henry Phillips) and Shannon Persinger, known as Shade and Shannon, perform at the gazebo in South Whitley as part of an ongoing performing arts program in South Whitley sponsored by the South Whitley Public Library and the Whitley County Community Foundation. The duet entertained a modest crowd on the lawn in front of the gazebo despite challenging temperatures near 90 degrees with country and western favorites by artists such as Johnny Cash, Roger Miller and Willie Nelson.

Miranda Lewellyn, 16

LAOTTO — Miranda Lewellyn, 16, a resident of rural LaOtto, died at 5 a.m. Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the family residence in Noble County.
She was born April 26, 1995 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of John M. and Tracie M. (Campbell) Lewellyn.
Her father preceded her in death April 5, 1998.

Edith Ritchie, 98

Edith M. (McCreery) Ritchie, 98, a resident of rural Gaston, died Friday, July 29, 2011, at Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
She was born in Gaston Dec. 4, 1912, to Lloyd and Winona (Manring) McCreery.
Surviving are her son Donald P. Ritchie of Gaston; four granddaughters, two grandsons, 15 great-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, three nephews, and two nieces.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers Ralph McCreery, Paul McCreery, and C. Wayne McCreery.

Grace Keister, 80

Grace L. Keister, 80, a resident of rural Albion and wife of Lester “Pete” Keister, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2011, at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City.
She had been a patient there for the past five days.
Mrs. Keister was born in Churubusco Nov. 26, 1930, a daughter of Ralph and Effie (Tarlton) Shanabarger.
She spent her formative years in Churubusco and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1948.
On July 7, 1951 she was united in marriage in Merriam to Lester “Pete” Keister, and lived all of her adult life in Noble County.
