Smith-Green board hears patron concerns

CHURUBUSCO — When the Smith-Green Community Schools Board of Trustees met last week there was a room full of people who wanted to share their concerns about several issues including higher textbook fees, the possible dismissal of a long-time coach and the ruling of a case involving two students who posted pictures to social networking sites.
With no formal notice of fee increases for textbooks, materials and programs, many parents where dismayed and shocked to receive fee statements on registration night at SGCS.

Firemen hurt in Saturday house fire

COLUMBIA CITY — Two firefighters were injured during the aftermath of a fire at an abandoned house Saturday night.
Chad Jahn and Carl Freewalt, both assigned to the Thorncreek Township Fire Department, were dismantling the ceiling of the fire-damaged house on Etna Road when the ceiling collapsed, injuring both firefighters, according to Township Fire Chief Adam Hurley.

Gladys Durham, 90

AVILLA — Gladys O. Durham, 90, a former resident of Avilla, died at midnight Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at North Ridge Village Nursing Home in Albion.
She was born Jan. 10, 1921, to Benjamin Franklin and Florence (Butler) Smith.
Her husband Medford Durham preceded her in death.
The surviving relatives include her four children, Charlotte (Clarence) McCormick of Avilla, Carolyn Witefeldt of Larwill, Randy Biglow of Warsaw, and Bill Biglow of Avilla; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Karen Chaney, 65

August 22, 2011

Karen Juanita Chaney, 65, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.
Born March 7, 1946 in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of William and Eva (Staley) Shumaker.
She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church of Columbia City. She enjoyed crafting, sewing and scrapbooking, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Surviving are her husband Leland Chaney; daughters Rebecca (Kevin) Berning, Tina (Kevin) Biddle; brother William (Lorraine) Shumaker; four grandchildren, Nathan, Oliver and Lily Berning and Andrew Biddle.

Richard Yarnelle, 92

SOUTH WHITLEY — Richard J. Yarnelle, 92, of South Whitley died peacefully at his home at 3:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011.
He was born Feb. 5, 1919 in Wabash, a son of the late George and Helen (DePuy) Yarnelle. His formative years were spent in Wabash where he graduated from Wabash High School in 1936.
A talented athlete, he earned a football scholarship to Purdue University. After being injured, he attended Butler University.

Richard Kreider, 44

Richard A. Kreider, 44, of Warsaw, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 at his residence.
Born Dec. 19, 1966, he was the son of Richard H. and Delores Kreider.
He attended Whitko High School and graduated with the Class of 1985.
He worked at 80/20 in Columbia City.
A lifetime resident of Columbia City, he lived in Warsaw for the past year. He was an avid bowler and participated in a league.

Orren Ware, 81

Orren Albert Ware, 81, of Columbia City, passed away 4:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born May 27, 1930 in Huntington, he was the son of Albert E. and Martha May (Hartman) Ware.
Raised in Huntington County, he graduated with the Class of 1948 from Bippus High School.
On May 29, 1949 he married Deloris May Geeting in Whitley County where he and his wife established their home.

Willa King, 75

August 22, 2011

Willa M. King, 75, of Columbia City, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011 at 11:30 p.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City.
Born Sept. 2, 1935 in Breathitt, Ky., she was the daughter of Willie and Clara (Little) Young.
Her formative years were spent in Kentucky where she completed her education.
On Oct. 6, 1956, she married Darrell King at Springfield, Ill.

Marge Phillips, 56

August 22, 2011

Marge Ann (Lagoe) Phillips, 56, of South Whitley, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2011, in Fort Wayne, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 29, 1954, in Herkimer, N.Y., she was the daughter of Richard and Patricia Lagoe of Sherburne, N.Y.
She was a homemaker and artist. She loved art, music, country life, her family and cats.
Marge was an intelligent, creative, sensitive person who brought living color to the gray world around her.

Cougars on the loose? Local sightings increase

While Indiana conservation personnel remain skeptical, sightings locally of cougars, or mountain lions, continue to occur.
One of the most compelling sightings in Whitley County happened one year ago today when Max and Linda Zimmerman of Round Lake claim to have seen one of the big cats drinking from the shore of Big Cedar Lake.
