Terry Austin, 64

August 29, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Terry L. Austin, 64, formerly of South Whitley, most recently residing in Columbia City, died at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 pursuing his passion of golf at Sycamore Golf Club, North Manchester.
He had been battling cancer.
He was born Nov. 29, 1946 in Fort Wayne, a son of the late Jack D. and Verda J. (Mullinax) Austin.
His formative years were spent in South Whitley and he graduated from South Whitley High School in 1965. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Cincinnati and became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Gene Ward, 81

COLUMBIA CITY — Gene D. Ward, 81, a Union Township, Whitley County native, died at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 in the North Care Hospice House in North Kansas City, Mo.
Gene was born April 29, 1930 in Fort Wayne, a son of Hubert A. and Nora May (Miller) Ward.
His formative years were spent in Union Township, Whitley County. He graduated from Coesse High School in 1948.
On June 16, 1951 Gene Darwin Ward and Loretta May Miller where united in marriage.
The couple lived in Memphis, Tenn. and later Jacksonville, Fla. while Gene served in the Navy during the Korean War.

James Wise, 97

COLUMBIA CITY: James W. Wise, 97, of Etna Troy Township, Whitley County, died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 23, 2011 at the Gulf Coast Village in Cape Coral, Fla.
He was born Oct. 15, 1913 in Etna Troy Township, a son of Earl and Samantha Hann (Snodgrass) Wise.
His formative years were spent in Etna Troy Township. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1932.
On July 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth L. Miller. They made their home at Old Lake until 1944 when they moved to their home on 350 West.
Mrs. Wise died June 13, 2004.

Kristopher Hazelbaker, 24

SOUTH WHITLEY — Kristopher Dallace Hazelbaker, 24, died at his home in South Whitley Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011.
He was born Dec. 17, 1986 in Marion County, a son of Tim W. and Patricia (Flowers) Hazelbaker.
On Sept. 30, 2010, he was united in marriage to Brittany Depew.
He is survived by his wife, Brittany; a step-daughter, Kassidie Depew; his parents, Tim and Patricia Hazelbaker, Lapel; two brothers, Travis Hazelbaker and T.J. Hazelbaker, Noblesville and two sisters, Tosha and Amanda Hazelbaker, Noblesville.
Private arrangements are by Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.

Mayoral hopefuls square off

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s three candidates for the town’s top elected position shared the stage Tuesday night and gave their views on everything from economic development to what should be done with the aging city swimming pool.
The event, the first debate involving the final three candidates for Columbia City mayor, was hosted by the Columbia City Kiwanis and packed a meeting room of the Peabody Public Library with more than 100 potential voters.

YMCA gives swim lessons to 3rd-graders

COLUMBIA CITY — When third-graders from throughout Whitley County line up at the local YMCA for free swimming lessons, they will reap the benefits of a contingent of veteran swim instructors.
The most seasoned of these aquatic experts is George Roth, who’s been teaching the finer points of treading water for the better part of four decades.

Donna Vorce, 78

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Donna Jean Chappell Kern Vorce, 78, of Canandaigua, N.Y., died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 in Canandaigua where she resided since July 9, 2000.
She was born in Whitley County on Sept. 17, 1932, the daughter of the late Thomas E. Chappell and Ruth M. Bills.
He formative years were spent in Milton, Pa. where she graduated from Milton High School June 1950.

Rickey Moyer, 57

SOUTH WHITLEY — Rickey T. “Rick” Moyer, 57, of rural South Whitley, died Sunday evening, Aug. 21, 2011 in the emergency room at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was transported after becoming suddenly ill at his home.
He was born May 27, 1954 in Columbia City, a son of Joseph Denver and Mary Deloris (Anderson) Moyer.
His formative years were spent in rural South Whitley.
He graduated from Whitko High School.
On June 3, 1972 he was united in marriage to Jill E. Fry. They made their home south of South Whitley for the past 39 years.

Olive Tonkel, 87

August 24, 2011

Olive M. Tonkel, 87, a former resident of Collins and widow of Charles Merl Tonkel, Sr., passed away at 9:23 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at The Oaks in Columbia City.
She had been in declining health for some time, and had been a patient at the nursing home for the past six years.
Mrs. Tonkel was born in Fort Wayne May 3, 1924, a daughter of Lyman and Pauline (Sines) Blanchard.
She spent her formative years in Fort Wayne, and was married there on May 25, 1941 to Charles Merl Tonkel, Sr.

Smith-Green board hears patron concerns

CHURUBUSCO — When the Smith-Green Community Schools Board of Trustees met last week there was a room full of people who wanted to share their concerns about several issues including higher textbook fees, the possible dismissal of a long-time coach and the ruling of a case involving two students who posted pictures to social networking sites.
With no formal notice of fee increases for textbooks, materials and programs, many parents where dismayed and shocked to receive fee statements on registration night at SGCS.
