Col. City wins close game over ’Busco

COLUMBIA CITY — Despite rallying to get the score within five in the last four minutes, Churubusco lost to Columbia City Tuesday night, 52-43.
Whitley County’s Eagles gave the fans their money’s worth, with Churubusco cutting a 25-17 deficit into a three-point game in the third quarter.
The Eagles traded baskets in the first two minutes of the game, until Columbia City’s Brandon Gay knocked down a three to give the home team a 5-4 advantage.
Churubusco’s game plan was to alter the pace of Columbia City’s quick tempo.

Margaret Cavanaugh, 55

Margaret (Fisher) Cavanaugh, 55, of Lafayette, formerly of Whitley County, died at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital. Born June 5, 1956, in Muncie, she was the daughter of the late Owen and Dorothy Williams Fisher.
She was a 1981 graduate of Purdue University and was a Food Services Director for 20 years.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, her granddaughter, her cat, and helping the mentally handicapped.

Zane Moyer, second grader at South Whitley Elementary School, took one look at his great-grandmother, Leola Williamson, and ran to her arms during the first ever First Class Bulldogs assembly.
At South Whitley Elementary School, teachers, staff and administrators use a positive approach to teach students. SWES’ nickname is “the Bull Dogs,”
according to Principal Bruce Hansen. "We practice positive school involvement here. We take notice of the good things students do every day,” said Hansen.
Each day students are given the opportunity to receive “Bull Dog Bones.”

Ray B. Knox, 96, a resident of Fort Wayne and a retired missionary, passed away at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at the Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne.
He was born Aug. 28, 1915, a son of Ernest and Nellie (Hatmaker) Knox.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
The surviving relatives include his widow, DeVere Knox; two daughters, Louise Linnemeier of rural Fort Wayne and Lucy Wallace of Berryville, Ark.; a sister, Ruth Meade of Three Rivers Mich.; eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Regina Mary Frazier, 89, a resident of rural Fort Wayne and wife of prominent Lake Township farmer George W. Frazier, died at 10:03 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at her home.
She was born Dec. 1, 1922, a daughter of Joseph and Anna (Molargik) Konger.

KIMMEL — Diane M. Bratton, 41, of rural Kimmell, died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne where she was admitted Nov. 23.
She was born March 22, 1970, in Columbia City, a daughter of Roger T. and Toni G. (Butt) Lemon.
Her formative years were spent in Washington Township, Noble County. She graduated from West Noble High School and Fairfield Vocational Cosmetology School.
On Nov. 2, 1991, she was united in marriage to Brian J. Bratton. They always made their home in rural Kimmell.

WARSAW — Ruth L. Schrader, 101, of Warsaw, died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since Dec. 27, 2000.
She was born Oct. 21, 1910, in Furnace County, Nebraska, a daughter of Minard and Estelle (Coplen) Gates.
At the age of 13, her family moved to Indiana, settling in Pierceton. She graduated with the class of 1929 from Pierceton High School.
On Feb. 6, 1930, she was united in marriage to Carl J. Schrader.

COLUMBIA CITY — Helen Rowe, 81, Columbia City, formerly of South Whitley, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 in her residence.
She was born Jan. 1, 1930, in Royalton, Ky. to Hargis and Carsie (Salyers) Marshall.
She married Rev. Dudley Rowe Sr, who preceded her in death.

Willodean Alice Lyons, 92, of Huntington, passed away at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at Oakbrook Village Nursing Home, Huntington.
Born March 27, 1919, in Columbia City, the daughter of Raymond Earl and Francis Marie (Nei) Schrader.
She spent her childhood in Columbia City where she graduated from Columbia City High School with the class of 1938.
On June 30, 1941, she married Robert M. Lyons in Kentucky. She lived all of her married life in Huntington.

'Grandma I'm hurt . . .': Phone scam Monday preys on emotions; bank personnel help block swindle

COLUMBIA CITY – An elderly Columbia City woman was nearly swindled out of $3,000 Monday morning had it not been for some questioning about a transaction by personnel at People’s Federal Savings Bank.
The criminals made a phone call to the woman concocting a scenario where bail money was immediately needed for the woman’s grandson.
When the phone rang at the 82-year-old woman’s home, she heard “Grandma, I’m hurt . . . I’ve been in a wreck, I got some teeth knocked out and I need money.”
