’Busco boys win, girls lose to Angola in opening round of NECC tourney

ANGOLA — Churubusco traveled to Angola Tuesday night and beat the Hornets 44-32 in the first round of the Northeast Hoosier Conference Tournament.

Three Eagle hoopsters scored in double digits; Chris Jones had 12, Josh LeFever chipped in 11 and Tyler Arrowsmith tallied 10. The three combined for 33 of ’Busco’s 11 points.

With a close 8-7 score in favor of Churubusco at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles pulled away at the half, outscoring the Hornets 12-4. ’Busco added to its 20-11 score at halftime with an 8-5 advantage in the third quarter.

Columbia City hangs on for win

COLUMBIA CITY — The Lady Eagles came out victorious Tuesday, hosting the Wawasee hoops team and winning 55-46.
Columbia City jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the heels of a Kalisha Goree jumper and an Emily Whiteleather put-back from an offensive board.
The Lady Warriors bounced back with a trey from Kilee Knafel, one of her five 3-pointers on the evening.
Wawasee scored again to take a 5-4 lead.
Whitleather converted on an assist from Goree, who followed the helper with a jump shot to give the Lady Eagles an 8-5 lead before Macie Hinen added another two points.

A.D. RECOGNIZED: Penrod honored nationally

COLUMBIA CITY — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) awards NFHS Citations to one athletic director from each of the eight regions the country is divided into.

Last month at the National Athletic Director’s Conference in Indianapolis, Columbia City High School Athletic Director Geoff Penrod received just such a citation for Region IV.
