NEWS ALERT: ‘New Medicare card’ latest scam to hit Whitley County

COLUMBIA CITY – At least two attempted telephone scam reports were made to local law enforcement officials Wednesday concerning a phone solicitor seeking personal information to issue “a new Medicare card.”
According to information supplied to The Post & Mail, the male phone caller informed his target that “he was going to send out a new Medicare card” and needed to confirm personal information. Included was a solicitation of personal banking information.

BUSY 2012: Heavy slate for commissioners

COLUMBIA CITY — In addition to their regular duties as Whitley County Commissioners, Don Amber, Tom Rethlake and George Shrumpf will continue to serve on several committees and boards throughout the county in 2012.
All three will serve on the Board of Finance, responsible for determining how to invest monies for the year.
The trio will also be members of the Solid Waste Board.

FIRST DAY: Mayor Daniel shuffles hats

COLUMBIA CITY — Having sworn-in Sunday and with the lay-over passed, Mayor Ryan Daniel spent the first day at his new office job Tuesday, wearing different hats throughout the day.
After rising while streets were still lit only by streetlights, the Mayor hosted a breakfast at the Eagle Nest Event Center for all city employees from 7 to 8:30 a.m.
Once finished, Daniel went to his office at City Hall to familiarize himself with his new surroundings and attend to mayoral duties.
At 5:15 p.m., Daniel had his first official meeting as Mayor, specifically with the Board of Works.

Blanche Nichols, 94

COLUMBIA CITY — Blanche Louise Nichols, 94, of rural Columbia City, died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at her home.
She was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Thorncreek Township, a daughter of Ray Jennings and Alice Berniece (Lott) Hively.
Her formative years were spent in Thorncreek Township. She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1935.
On June 28, 1935, she was united in marriage to Paul C. Nichols. They made their home in Thorncreek Township until 1939 when they moved to Lorane. Mr. Nichols died Oct. 18, 1952.

Virginia Lusk-Baumgartner, 95

COLUMBIA CITY — Virginia L. Lusk-Baumgartner, 95, formerly of Columbia City and currently of Fort Wayne, passed away at 7:47 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at Covington Commons, Fort Wayne.
Born June 1, 1916, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Sylvester and Elsie (Ferguson) Coleman.
She spent her childhood in Fort Wayne and graduated from Elmhurst High School with the class of 1934.
In 1947, she moved to Whitley County and in 1965, moved to Tri-Lakes. In 2001, she moved to her present address at Covington Commons in Fort Wayne.

Paul Leiter, 62

PIERCETON — Paul Eugene Leiter, 62, of rural Pierceton, died at 6:05 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at his home. He had been in failing health.
He was born April 14, 1949, in Warsaw, a son of the late, Cloyce “Dick” and Dorothy (Pernesky) Leiter.
His formative years were spent in the Warsaw and Leesburg areas. He graduated from Warsaw High School.
