SOUTH WHITLEY — A special session will be held Thursday at 6:15 p.m. for the South Whitley Town Council to make a decision on the town’s energy source.
For months, the council has been working on revamping the electrical contracts for the town. After hearing Indiana Municipal Power Agency’s (IMPA) proposal on its co-op energy service, the council was able to determine contractual obligations with the town’s current energy provider Duke Energy. Previous considerations proved Duke’s rate is costing the town $220,000 more on an annual basis compared to IMPA’s pricing.
The Post & Mail newspaper is compiling tributes to veterans of the U.S. military for inclusion in a special publication to be inserted in the paper on Nov. 9.
Saluting Military, a 2012 Veterans Day Salute will be a special tabloid-sized section which will include names, photos and some details of military veterans, past and present.
The deadline to submit photos and information is Nov. 1.
Order forms can be picked up at The Post & Mail office at 927 W. Connexion Way, Columbia City or by clipping a form out of the paper.
Cost for tributes is $5.
COLUMBIA CITY — With the Columbia City Common Council approving its authority for a water bond in September’s regular meeting, the council approved a motion Tuesday to set the dollar amount at $2 million.
The council discussed the possibility of the proposed water bond at its last meeting in September, saying it was needed in order for the water department to eventually start rolling on many of its upcoming projects.
Donald E. Keirn, 84, of Columbia City, passed away at midnight on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City. Born June 17, 1928, in Columbia City, he was the son of Esta and Rhea (Workman) Keirn.
Roger Lee Mantle, 66, of Columbia City, passed away at 4:13 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at his home. Born June 6, 1946, in Wolf Lake, Noble County, he was the son of Solomon and Blanche D. (Worrick) Mantle.
He graduated from South Whitley High School with the class of 1964. He lived in Whitley, Noble and LaGrange counties prior to moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he lived for the past 13 years. He returned to Whitley County on Dec. 26, 2011.
HUNTINGTON — Columbia City basketball stand-out Drew Benedict signed with Huntington University last week, as the Forresters’ first recruit for the 2013 season.
Benedict, a 5-foot-10 senior shooting guard for the Eagles, is one of the area’s top shooters, holding Columbia City High School’s record for most 3-pointers made for a season and career, and is on pace to score more than 1,000 points by the end of this season — making him one of the top five in Columbia City’s history.

COLUMBIA CITY — A Fort Wayne man will spend 12 years behind bars for his part in an April crash that killed a three-year-old boy.
Mya Tun, 52, of Fort Wayne was given 12 years by Whitley County Circuit Court Judge James Heuer on Monday, a sentence he will serve in its entirety, for charges connected to an accident April 29 on U.S. 24 at Ind. 114 in South Whitley County.
In that accident, Ethan Hoffman, 3, was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he was later pronounced dead.
COLUMBIA CITY — An Indianapolis woman was sentenced in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday to eight years to the Indiana Department of Corrections, four to be served and four suspended, for charges relating to August’s drug sting in Churubusco.
According to a plea agreement, Sue Kellems, 21, pleaded guilty to dealing in a schedule II controlled substance, a Class B felony and possession of a handgun without a license, a Class A misdemeanor.
