SOUTH WHITLEY — Kent Theater sits with a nearly perfect façade at 220 S. State St. in South Whitley, but look behind the exterior and the theater is anything but perfect.
Upon a recent inspection of the site that once housed Turning Point Church, the former theater looked much the same as it did nine months ago when a fire gutted the theater, causing the roof to collapse Feb. 18.
Debris and rubble still cover the theater seating, while parts of the structure still display blackened walls.
COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City High School senior Foster Eber won’t be watching football and eating turkey on Thanksgiving.
He will be part of an 86-year tradition — the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Foster auditioned for the Macy’s Great American Marching Band after watching last year’s parade.
Foster will leave Saturday to meet up with approximately 250 band members to rehearse for the parade. The marching band will perform two pieces during the event, “Moves Like Jagger,” and a jazz number entitled “Lazy River.”
ALLEN COUNTY — Two men pleaded guilty to a marijuana-growing operation at Lake Everett — a mile northeast of the Whitley County line in Allen County.
Jason Bridges, 32, and Jarrod Vroom, 39, were arrested Sept. 8 in a joint investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Allen County Drug Task Force and Indiana State Police, which uncovered more than 100 marijuana plants.
Allen County’s SWAT team raided Bridges’ house and found the growing operation, along with an additional four pounds of marijuana.
Robert E. Phend, 83 of South Whitley, passed away at p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, in his residence.
On Dec. 13, 1929, he was born in Columbia City, to Paul and Marie (Wysong) Phend.
He married Marjorie Johnson on July 11, 1953, who survives. Robert retired from International Harvester/Navistar in Fort Wayne.
Other surviving relatives include four children, Norma Schweigel of Columbia City; Michael E. (Sharon) Phend of Pierceton, Rebecca A. Phend of South Whitley and Rose E. Phend of South Whitley; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Daniel James Howard, 69, of Columbia City, passed away at 4 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at his home. Born June 25, 1943, in Warsaw, he was the son of James Boyce and Helen Lucille (Fisher) Howard.
He graduated from Warsaw High School with the Class of 1961.
After graduation, he honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He earned an Associate’s degree from Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis. On Sept. 5, 1965, he married Ouida Sue Crum in Kossuth, Miss.
