NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says New York City Marathon has been canceled.
His statement Friday came after mounting criticism that this was not the time for a race.
With people in storm-ravaged areas still shivering without electricity and the death toll in New York City at more than 40, many New Yorkers recoiled at the prospect of police officers being assigned to protect a marathon on Sunday.
COLUMBIA CITY — Leadership Whitley County (LWC) sipped and savored wines, beers, desserts and hors d’oeuvres Thursday night in an effort to raise money for the organization.
Kelley Sheiss, program director for LWC, has worked to develop LWC so business men and women as well as community leaders will be able to make a difference.

COLUMBIA CITY — Selected from a pool of more than 250 applications, Whitko High School senior Tiffany Schuman, 18, was chosen as the only Indiana student to take the stage at the 85th National FFA Convention and Expo, using her soprano voice to sing as a National FFA Chorus member. Approximately 55,000 FFA members and guests attend the convention each year as they come together “to learn about careers in the agriculture industry, compete for scholarships, volunteer in the community and shape the future of the National FFA Organization.”
COLUMBIA CITY — As technology continues to advance, many people are keeping up with current news and events through notifications that come directly to their cellular phones in the form of a text message. Whitley County has announced that as of Nov. 1, a partnership with the Nixle Community Information Service (Nixle) will allow residents to do that and more.
Reverend John Daniel Groff, 100, of Huntington, died Oct. 31, 2012.
He was born in Jefferson Township, Huntington County to Russell and Hazel (Hawkins) Groff on May 24, 1911.
He married Helen Eberhart in 1941.
In 1993, following the death of Helen Groff, he married Mary Myerly Reece.
He is survived by two children, four grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandson. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Dr., Huntington.
