CHURUBUSCO â At a short meeting Wednesday, town council members learned of an inevitable rate increase for insurance.
Council member Mark Conrad explained the Physicians Health Plan (PHP) rate increase and discussed what the change would mean for town employees.
Physicians Health Plan is an insurance group provider that provides town employees with health care coverage.
The proposed PHP increase would be 17 percent. Council President Frank Kessler said in light of the increase, the town would most likely keep the current insurance plan.
COLUMBIA CITY â As the economy continues to struggle, Whitley County Joint Planning and Building Executive Director David Sewell said revitalization and economic development concerns are growing.
Sewellâs department provides planning, zoning and building services to the county.
COLUMBIA CITY â While private donors and fundraising efforts have managed to keep the Human Society of Whitley County running, Lindsey Pease, director of operations, said the financial costs continue to climb â forcing the shelter to request $25,000 from county funding for 2013.
âI donât know how weâre going to operate without additional funding because I donât really feel like we can eliminate the intake from the county,â said Pease. âItâs hard to say where weâll end up without their support.â
COLUMBIA CITY â While the fall installment deadline for property taxes sent an influx of people into the Whitley County Auditorâs office last week, approximately 1,700 Homestead Verification sheets have yet to be turned into the office. The deadline is Dec. 31.
Whitley County Auditor Jennifer McGuire recently sent out the final letter of notification Wednesday to those who still need to return the pink sheet.
According to McGuire, the sheet has been mailed out to citizens every year for the past three years.

WARSAW â Columbia City boys basketball stand-out Drew Benedict scored 27 points for the second game in a row, leading the 2-0 Eagles to a 59-49 victory over Warsaw Saturday.
Columbia City had three players with double-digit scoring â Derek Hinen and Mason Coverstone assisted Benedict with a combined 27 points as well.
Hinen and Coverstone helped the Eagles jump out to a 5-0 lead â scoring on Columbia Cityâs first two possessions.
SYRACUSE â Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra is often quoted as saying âIt ainât over âtil itâs over.â
But at Saturdayâs Super Duals wrestling tournament at Wawasee High School, even after it was over, it wasnât over.
Columbia Cityâs match with host Wawasee and the tournament championship had to be decided on the eighth-criteria tiebreaker.
When the dust cleared, the Eagles picked up the win over the Warriors and completed a perfect 5-0 day to take the tournament championship.
Phillip Marin Dingus, 61, of Whitley County, passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at 2:20 p.m. in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
He was born Nov. 28, 1950, in Hite, Ky. to Lacy and Pauline (Shepherd) Dingus.
He has lived in Whitley County since 1963. He previously worked for Larwill Products as a wire cutter.
Bonita E. Gamble, 89, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:13 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
Born Jan. 9, 1923, in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Homer J. and Hulda E. (Auer) Ummel.
She was a lifetime resident of Columbia City and graduated from Washington Center High School with the Class of 1941.
Marilyn M. Krom, 69, of High Lake, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at her home. She had been in failing health.
She was born May 14, 1943, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Herbert and Anna Mae (Maas) Alles.
Her formative years were spent in Jefferson Township. She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School.
In 1966, she moved to Wilshire, OH until 1989 when she moved to Big Cedar Lake. She was employed 15 years at Noble Wire, retiring in 2005.
On Oct. 27, 2007, she married Rick L. Krom. They have always made their home together at High Lake.
