’Busco headed to state finals

Churubusco's wrestling team is competing in the Indiana State Wrestling Coaches Association's Team State Finals on Saturday. The event was formed because the IHSAA got rid of the team finals tournament this season.

Oneta Bader, 101

December 21, 2012

Oneta V. Bader, 101, of Columbia City, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City where she was admitted on Friday, Dec. 14.
She was born Sept. 2, 1911 in Allen County, a daughter of Albert and Rebecca E. Grover. As a child, the family lived in Canada before moving back to New Haven. She graduated from New Haven High School with the Class of 1928.
On March 27, 1929, she was united in marriage to Gaylord H. Lake. They made their home in New Haven. In 1939, they moved to Washington Township.

RECOGNIZING LEADERSHIP: Sometimes Eagles do flock

CHURUBUSCO — A quote seen at Smith-Green Community Schools reads, “Leaders are like eagles. They don’t flock — you find them one at a time.” Monday’s school board meeting focused on “Spotlight on Success” recognizing several great leaders and proving that sometimes, Eagles do flock.

Lee Etzler, Zach Dock, Paul Sade, Clint Davis, Todd Lortie, Nate Wright, John Schmidt and Kyle Monk of the high school football coaching staff were recognized for not just being great coaches, but for their direction and life lessons offered to young athletes.

NEW SCOREBOARDS: 'Popping' up at Columbia City parks

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City just scored new resources for its parks.
The department, through its partnership with Pepsi Co., now has two new scoreboards for baseball and softball fields. The boards were provided by Pepsi as part of an agreement between the soft drink company and the department.

One of the new scoreboards will be installed at Field One at Morsches Park, which is the Columbia City High School varsity softball team’s field. The other will go to a new diamond that is being built out at DeVol Field.

ETZLER STEPS DOWN

Churubusco Junior-Senior High School's head football coach Lee Etzler is expected to officially submit a letter of resignation today. Etzler told his players in a text message yesterday that he wanted to shift his priorities more toward his family. Etzler was 85-40 in 12 years at ’Busco, winning two Class A sectionals and regionals at the school and fell in the 2A sectional the last two seasons to eventual state champion Bishop Luers.

UNEXPECTED DONATION: Gold coin could be worth $1,600

SOUTH WHITLEY — A gold coin was found in the offering plate at South Whitley United Methodist Church.The one-ounce Krugerrand coin was given to the church by an anonymous donor Sunday.

Rob Barton is the pastor of the 200-plus congregation. He said his inquiry into the coin’s value showed it to be worth anywhere from $1,500 to $1,600.

Giving during the holiday season is encouraged by all kinds of nonprofit organizations wanting to reach out to those in need, but the church has never seen a donation quite like this.
