Joan M. Clapp, 83, of Columbia City, died at 5:35 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
She was born July 19, 1929, on the family farm south of Larwill, a daughter of C. Earl and Hazel L. (Schuh) Norris.
Her formative years were spent in Larwill. She attended Larwill High School where she was a cheerleader her junior year and graduated with the Class of 1947. She then attended Wayne University Beauty College, Fort Wayne.

Ellie Olivia Walter, 3-month-old daughter of Marc and Brooke Walter, died unexpectedly Friday morning, Dec. 6, 2012.
She was born Aug. 16, 2012 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Marc R. and Brooke N. (Weber) Walter.

H. Ruth Pickett, 96

H. Ruth Pickett, 96, of Fort Wayne, went to be in the arms of Jesus Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Covington Manor.
Born Dec. 12 1915, in Fort Wayne, she was employed as a registered nurse for more than 30 years at Lutheran Hospital, serving 25 years in labor and delivery.
She was a 1937 graduate of Lutheran Hospital of Nursing, former member of West Creighton Christian Church, member of First Christian Church and former member of Lutheran Hospital Alumni Association.

ROBBERIES: City amplifies patrol to prevent crime

COLUMBIA CITY — In light of Fort Wayne’s weekly bank robberies, Columbia City’s Police Department is taking a proactive approach to preventing crime.

The CCPD has ramped up its patrol for local banks in an effort to prevent robbers from coming to Columbia City from Fort Wayne.
Another heist happened on Fort Wayne’s southwest side at a Chase Bank on Lower Huntington Road Thursday afternoon.

CCPD Chief Tim Longenbaugh said the department has stepped up its patrol, especially in the morning as employees are coming to work, but also throughout the day.

EDUCATION APPS: Technology brings teaching to 21st century at Smith-Green

CHURUBUSCO — It is a 21st century, technology-laced world, even for 5-year-olds. For Smith-Green Community Schools (SGCS), the 2012-13 year has made a great leap into the future. The district was able to use money it obtained from Classroom Innovation Grants (CIG) to purchase Apple iPads for its kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms. Currently, there are seven iPads per classroom, but Churubusco Elementary School Principal Shellie Miller hopes to get more in the future.

ONLINE POLL: CCHS boys basketball given nod as season's best; pot legalization question next

George Bauer, 80

George Arthur Bauer, 80, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:36 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
Born on May 10, 1932, in South Bend, he was the son of John Lewis and Alice E. (Hall) Bauer.
He attended Thorncreek School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
A lifetime Whitley County resident, he worked for Schenkel’s Dairy, Huntington, in the maintenance and sanitation departments from 1974 until his retirement July 27, 1995. From 1949-74 he worked at Columbia Dairy in Columbia City.
