LIGONIER — Betty J. Minnick, 83, of Ligonier, formerly of North Webster and Syracuse, died at 2:24 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Larwill, to Cecil H. & Rachel Ann (Friend) Paulus.
She was married on Nov. 23, 1946, in North Webster to Harry E. Minnick Jr. who survives.
HUNTINGTON — Jack P. Barlow, Sr., 70 of Huntington, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at The Heritage of Huntington.
He was born Nov. 23, 1941, in Detroit, a son of William Henry and Lena Mae (Harlow) Barlow.
He was united in marriage to Rebecca J. Bedwell on Jan 19, 1962, in Livonia, Mich. She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Jack P. Barlow, Jr. of Huntington; a daughter, Kimberly J. Wood of Huntington; a sister, Virginia L. Tappan of Mio, Michigan; two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William C. Barlow.
COLUMBIA CITY — Argyle E. Beard, 88, of rural Columbia City, went to be with our Lord at 12:50 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor.
He was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Richland Township, a son of Dalton and Ruth (Coyle) Beard.
He completed his education at Larwill High School with the class of 1942.
He was a farmer, truck driver, custodian at Thorncreek Township School from 1952 until 1965 and a delivery and service man for Skelgas from 1965 until 1982 when he retired.
He then delivered flowers for Carriage House Flowers for many years.
COLUMBIA CITY — Joseph D. Shaffer, 80, of rural Columbia City, passed away peacefully at 11:23 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at his home with his family at his side.Â
Joe was a veteran from the German occupation to the Korean War.Â
He retired as a tool and die maker from Tokhiem Corporation after 44 years and continued farming. Â
Joe is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Stella; four daughters, Penny Shaffer, Pam (Carl) Emley, Paula (Ellis) Sturgill and Polly (David) Cox; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.Â
COLUMBIA CITY — The wind discussion will soon be making its way from the lower level conference room of the Whitley County Government Center — where the Whitley County Plan Commission meets — to the main conference chambers of the Whitley County Commissioners one floor up.
The commissioners spoke briefly last week with Plan Commission President Brandon Forrester about a potential timetable in regard to when the commissioners may have the wind turbine ordinance in front of them.

MARION — Columbia City’s boys basketball team held on for a win Saturday afternoon at Marion after the Giants made it a one-possesion game with two minutes left to play. The Eagles walked away with their 12th win of the season, 71-66.
Four of the five Columbia City starters had double-digit scoring with senior Matt Rethlake leading the team offensively for the first time this season with 18 points. Daniel Woll posted a double-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal. Drew Benedict (17) and Derek Hinen (11) also scored in double digits.
FORT WAYNE — Three Whitley County wrestlers traveled to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Saturday for the IHSAA Semi-State competition, hoping to qualify for a trip to Banker’s Life Fieldhouse and the IHSAA Individual State Finals Wrestling Tournament.
