CCHS senior competes at DYW state

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City High School senior, Michaela Thomas, will be competing at the state level of the Distinguished Young Women Program (DYW), formally known as Junior Miss. Thomas’ name replaces 2011 winner, Cassandra Petrie.

Pamela Thompson, co-coordinator of the Whitley County franchise of the DYW, will join Thomas on her trip to Kokomo as she becomes the county’s 48th representative to attend the competition.

“She is a joy to work with,” said Thompson.

NEARLY 'IDOLIZED:' ’Busco singer advances to televised audition on ‘American Idol’

COLUMBIA CITY — Being the next American Idol is an extreme long shot. But Churubusco’s Alex McDowell took that shot and auditioned in front of the three judges for the popular television show.
He and three of his friends made their way to St. Louis during the summer of 2011 and say they had a great time during the grueling audition process.
“My friends and I are all in the Ball State Singers Glee Club and we heard about the auditions being in St. Louis, so we traveled there,” said McDowell.

Gerald Mansdorfer, 76

Gerald R. Mansdorfer, 76 of Liberty Township, passed away at Hospice of Hamilton on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at 10:06 a.m.
He was born in Jefferson Township on Jan. 26, 1936, the son of Marguerite and Raymond Mansdorfer.
Gerald was a quality assurance supervisor for the Department of Defense for 27 years.
He was a member of Jefferson Chapel Methodist Church.
On Sept. 16, 1956, Gerald married Donna (DeBolt) Mansdorfer.

James Lawrence, 73

James L. Lawrence, 73, of Whitley County, died on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 in Pensacola, Fla.
He was born July 19, 1938, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of the late Richard and Florence (Lytle) Lawrence.
He was a devoted Christian and member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church Lake Township. He was a humble man and his strong faith led his life.
We will never forget his solitary love for his family. The Air Force veteran was a crew chief while stationed in France.

Ruth Ross, 94

COLUMBIA CITY — Ruth O. Ross, 94, of Columbia City, passed away at 10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City.
Born Feb. 9, 1918, in Jelloway, Knox County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Charles E. Birkhold and Onata Zoe (Snellenberger) Birkhold-Jeffery.
She graduated from Paulding High School, Ohio with the class of 1936.
On Jan. 6, 1936, she married Francis W. Ross in Hillsdale, Mich.

Eagles fall to undefeated Homestead

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team turned the tables against Homestead Tuesday night.

Unlike the Eagles’ first meeting with Homestead in late December, when they fell to a 16-0 deficit in the opening minutes, Columbia City scored the first points and had the lead at halftime.

Despite the improvements, the Eagles still fell to the undefeated Spartans, 65-55, Tuesday in Columbia City.

Homestead beat the Eagles by 18 points in their first meeting, after taking out their starters for much of the second half after taking a 32-12 lead.

HONOR: Area firemen honor the life of Herron, long-time Union Twp. fireman

Paul Herron, 85, long-time fireman in Union Township, died Wednesday. In addition to being a firefighter, he was a World War II veteran.
Columbia City firemen Zeb Ballard, Jeff Herendeen and Chief Tom LaRue stand respectfully as the funeral procession passes by.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP: Signature Giving establishes April 21 scholarship deadline

COLUMBIA CITY – Signature Giving is taking applications for the Signature Giving Vocational Scholarship.
Whitley County high school seniors who are seeking a vocational degree or certificate are encouraged to apply.
Applications are available at Columbia City High School, Whitko High School, and Churubusco High School and are due by April 21, 2012.
Some of the criteria the selection committee is requesting are: 2.5 GPA or higher, career goals, where you see yourself in five years, and how your future profession/ career will benefit the community of Whitley County.
