Marjorie Roe, 98

February 27, 2012

LIGONIER — Marjorie H. Roe, 98, of Albion, died at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Parkview Noble Hospital.
She was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Ligonier, a daughter of Guy and Mildred Tucker.
On April 14, 1934 she was married in Goshen to Elbert O. Roe, who preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1994.
The surviving relatives include her daughters, Janet Brumbaugh of Albion and Jayne Barron of Houston.
There are 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Roe on April 3, 1986.

COLUMBIA CITY —Congratulations were in order for 18-year-old Columbia City High School student Michaela Thomas as she walked through the front door of the Whitley County Community Foundation, holding two awards in her hands. “Nothing should hold anyone back from this experience,” said Thomas Sunday afternoon.

Col. City swim season ends at state finals

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbia City’s standout performance in the post-season came to an end Friday at the swimming state finals in Indianapolis.

The Eagles broke six school records at sectionals and advanced to state in three events.

Senior Cole Smith participated in three events in Indianapolis, the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Smith broke his own school record, set at sectionals, in the 50 free with a time of 21.76.

Smith was seeded 28th going into the meet and improved to finish 19th.

Donald Lienerth, 81

COLUMBIA CITY — Donald M. Lienerth, 81, of rural Columbia City, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at his home.
He was born April 2, 1930, in Saginaw, Mich., a son of John and Sophia (Artz) Lienerth.
During the Korean War, he served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne of the U.S. Army.
In August, 1952, he married Dora Lee Payne. She died in 1999.

Robert Frey, 88

EDON, Ohio ­— Robert E. Frey, 88, of Edon, Ohio, died at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, in his home after an illness of several months.
He was born on Jan. 25, 1924, in Bryan, Ohio, the son of Carl H. and Fern (Shackley) Frey.
He married Mabel G. Nester on Aug. 17, 1943, in Fort Jackson, S.C., and she preceded him in death on Dec. 2, 1994.
Mr. Frey was a 1942 graduate of Pleasant Mills High School and served during World War II as a corporal with a heavy artillery unit.

Tura Poehler, 93

COLUMBIA CITY — Tura C. Poehler, 93, of Columbia City, died at 1 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne where she was admitted on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
She was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Huntington, a daughter of John Henry and Catherine (Swearer) Forst.
Her formative years were spent in Huntington. She completed her education at Huntington High School.
In 1940, she was united in marriage to Earl James Poehler. They made their home in Huntington until 1963 when they moved to Tri Lakes.

Madelene Hively, 91

COLUMBIA CITY — Madelene Geneva Hively, 91, of Churubusco, formerly of Thorncreek Township, died at 10:12 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born July 19, 1920, in Whitley County, a daughter of the late Grover E. and Estella M. (Shively) Jagger.
Her formative years were spent in the Blue River area. She graduated from Churubusco High School in 1938.
On Sept. 21, 1940, she was united in marriage to Allan Egolf. Mr. Egolf died March 20, 1945, in the European Theater during World War II.

TAX DEDUCTION DEADLINE: Date looms for mobile home owners

COLUMBIA CITY — Mobile home assessment notices have been sent out for 2012, according to Whitley County Auditor Jen McGuire. “The assessments were done and turned in by Jan. 15. Everyone should have received their assessment by now,” said McGuire.

The deadline for submitting applications for property tax deductions is March 31, 2012.

Once reviewing the form to ensure the information is correct – owner, make, model, lot number and assessed value – it can be submitted to the auditor’s office.

THE PEOPLE I KNOW: Dick Zollinger

This is the first time I’ve written about a person I’ve not actually interviewed. Sometimes it’s easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

Thankfully, I know Richard Zollinger is full of grace and I’m banking on him extending it to me. Either that or I think I’m officially off the guest list for the best annual Super Bowl Party in the state of Indiana. I told him, “I’m writing this article with you or without you.” He kept declining an interview, telling me how there are so many more worthy people in Whitley County than he.
