SOUTH WHITLEY â The Wildcat basketball team played the final five minutes only putting two points on the scoreboard Friday night, falling to Northwood (9-11) 45-39.
With a 33-30 lead to start the fourth quarter, Whitko was nearly scoreless while the Panthers tacked on 15 points in the last eight minutes to take the win.
The score doesnât adequately display the seven lead changes and three-point margins throughout much of the game.
COLUMBIA CITY â The seniors â along with the rest of the Columbia City basketball team â are heading into the tourney having finished their regular season with a win.
The Eagles beat the visiting Fort Wayne Concordia 64-55 on senior night, the final regular season contest of the season for the twelfth graders.
âThose guys are all amazing,â said junior Derek Hinen. âWe have a special bond with each one of those guys; in a system like Columbia Cityâs I think you get to know each other better than a lot of other systemâs in the state.â
CHURUBUSCO â After several strategic planning meetings and public work sessions, the board of the Smith-Green Community School Corporation made the decision to go ahead with renovation and improvement projects for the entire corporation without exceeding $6 million and not raising the tax levy.
Dick Moake, chief executive officer of Moake Park Group architecture firm, said the building needs that were presented over the past few weeks of public work sessions, have stood the test of time.
COLUMBIA CITY â Beginning Monday, The Post & Mailâs annual special Progress editions will be inserted in the regular daily newspaper. The theme for the 2012 Progress edition is âDawn of a New Day.â
SOUTH WHITLEY â Investigators are not 100 percent sure of the exact cause, but have pinpointed the location where Saturdayâs fire in South Whitleyâs Kent Theatre originated. The building, located at 220 S. State St., served most recently as the meeting place for Turning Point Church.
Dispatchers at Whitley County Sheriffâs Department received a call at 11:31 a.m. Saturday reporting the building, built in 1947, was on fire.
Fire crews from Cleveland and Washington townships, as well as Columbia City, responded, working around the clock for much of the weekend to contain the fire.

COLUMBIA CITY â A heavily-used roadway in Whitley County will be closing soon for what is believed to be a 10-week period, according to Whitley County Engineer Brandon Forrester. âThat is the current estimate. Ten weeks is weather permitting, of course,â said Forrester.
A stretch of Business 30 East between United Oil and the Gateway East Industrial Park will be shut down beginning March 5 while the bridge passing over Eel River is reconstructed. Detour signs will be put up next week to warn commuters of the upcoming closure.

One Whitley County man, with his team of co-workers, has won one of the coveted awards. JJ Geiger, formerly of Columbia City, won for his work entitled âOpenhouse.", which can be viewed on the LX-TV Openhouse Homepage
âI worked as a producer/editor and won the Emmy in the category of âInformation/Public Affairs Series (more than 50 percent remote)â,â said Geiger. He worked alongside of Janel Tamares, Julee Margulies Metz and Eric Michael Wong.

COLUMBIA CITY â The YMCA Rapids Swim Team will be hosting a chicken/beef/vegan noodle dinner on Feb. 24 from 5:30 to 8:00pm at Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church. âI worked as a producer/editor and won the Emmy in the category of âInformation/Public Affairs Series (more than 50 percent remote)â,â said Geiger.
He worked alongside of Janel Tamares, Julee Margulies Metz and Eric Michael Wong.
âThe crew submitted three segments from the show which airs regionally on NBC in 10 to 15 different markets,â said Geiger.
