NATURAL RESOURCE BOARD: Whitley County volunteer sought

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Board of Commissioners is seeking a volunteer interested in the conservation of natural resources to serve as the Whitley County representative on the Wood-Land-Lakes council.

“We’ve tried to get someone interested in that,” said Commissioner Tom Rethlake. “If there’s anyone in the community, we’d really like them to let us know.”

POOL CLOSING?: Local pool hemorrhaging cash

COLUMBIA CITY — Expenses for the Burnworth Memorial Pool continue to exceed revenues and major repairs are an ongoing concern among Columbia City park board members. Currently, the park board is losing approximately $30,000 for the three-month pool season, which is June, July and August.

In Monday evening’s park board meeting, Park Director Mark Green presented a proposal from engineers he has spoken to in the past two weeks.

INTERNSHIP BEGINNING: Two Columbia City students headed for Government Center

COLUMBIA CITY — Two Columbia City High School students are going to get a taste of geography and engineering in the coming months. The students will intern at the Whitley County Government Center, one with County Engineer Brandon Forrester and the other with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Coordinator Dan Weigold.

One of the students will intern with the Engineer and Surveyors office from March 5 through May 25, for two hours in the afternoon. Forrester said this is the department’s second internship, the first coming in the 2009-2010 school year.
