REVEALING ROOSEVELT'S CHARACTER: ‘Teddy’portrayed at annual meeting

COLUMBIA CITY — An informative presentation of Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency entertained those present at the Whitley County Historical Society’s annual meeting, as Gib Young portrayed the 26th President of the United States. The event was held Monday at The Brownstone, located at 105 S. State St. in South Whitley.
Young walked around the room full of people, introducing himself as Theodore Roosevelt before sitting down to a meal. Afterward, he impersonated Roosevelt, speaking about the presidency for nearly 40 minutes.

PERSONNEL SHUFFLE: Whitko school board OKs job changes

PIERCETON — Several leadership changes and retirements will take place in Whitko Community School Corporation according to Superintendent Steve Clason. The transitions will become effective beginning with the 2012-13 school year.
“This is one of those times as a superintendent which is an exciting time and scary time as well,” Clason said at the Board of School Trustees regular monthly meeting Monday evening. “We (WCSC) have a number of people changing positions, changing roles, and doing things differently.”

Gladys Reimer, 85

Gladys Loretta Reimer, 85, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:49 a.m. Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Oak Pointe, Columbia City.
Born May 16, 1926, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Harry and Nora Luella (Nelson) Johnson.
Raised in Fort Wayne, she attended Central High School.
She moved to Columbia City following her marriage in 1943 to John Stidham. After Mr. Stidham’s death, she moved to South Whitley in 1966 and later bought a home in Columbia City.

Ailsa Schuman, 93

Ailsa L. “Billie” Schuman, 93, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:55 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Inc., Columbia City.
Born March 27, 1918, in Ormas, she was the daughter of Donald C. and Goldie B. (Adair)Goodrich.
She graduated from Ligonier High School with the class of 1936.
For 22 years, she lived in the Pierceton and North Webster areas before moving to Columbia City in 1990.
She worked at the Pennsylvania Railroad for six years prior to working as a secretary for Columbia City Freight Lines for 22 years.

Nina Grant, 87

March 21, 2012

Nina Grant, 87, of Columbia City, passed away at 6:40 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
Born March 26, 1924, in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Wilbur and Lucille (Weeks) Pressler.
A lifetime Whitley County resident, she graduated from Columbia City High School with the class of 1942.
On Dec. 20, 1943, she married Jack Grant. For 40 years, she worked at Gates Law Office, Columbia City, retiring in November, 2004.

Lorraine Willyard, 82

Lorraine A. Willyard, 82, of Columbia City, passed away at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2012, at her home.
Born Aug. 6, 1929, in Churchville, Md., she was the daughter of B.W. and Ada (Blackburn) Parlier.
When she was an infant, she moved with her family to Bedford, Ohio, where she graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1947. She completed her education when she graduated from Cleveland Bible College, Cleveland, Ohio.

Wildcats’ take season opener

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys and girls track seasons began Tuesday with wins over Southwood.

The boys won 87-35 and the girls defeated Southwood 83-39. Both teams combined for 26 first-place finishes.

Connor Stouder, Jordan Sims and Micaela Sylvester led the Wildcats, winning two events apiece. Sims and Sylvester swept all four hurdle races. Stouder won the 100- and 200-meter dash.

Alec Wilkinson won the pole vault by five feet with a 12-foot vault. Jude Stieglitz won the 800-meter run with a 2:09.0 time, with teammate Dallas Asher three seconds behind for a second-place finish.

PHOTO - THREE VEHICLE ACCIDENT: CCPD investigates crash on US 30

Columbia City Police Officers Jeff Chapman and Shane Caudill investigate the scene of a personal injury accident Monday evening at the intersection of U.S. 30 and W. Lincolnway. At approximately 6:37 p.m., two passenger vehicles and moped collided, injuring two people. Both were transported by EMS to the hospital, according to the CCPD. The accident remains under investigation.

Dorothy Lamb, 94

March 19, 2012

Dorothy O. Lamb, 94, died at Covington Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fort Wayne on Sunday, March 18, 2012.
She was born July 19, 1917, in Adams County to David and Fannie (Huser) Habegger.
Her husband, John W. Lamb passed away in March of 2010.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Brunson of Fort Wayne; three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Juanita Munson of Craigville.
A funeral service is 11 a.m. Thursday with calling one hour prior, at Elzey Patterson Rodak Home For Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne.

Robert McLaughlin, 98

COLUMBIA CITY — Robert Foster McLaughlin, 98, formerly of Union Township, died Monday, March 19, 2012, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo, Mich. where he was admitted Wednesday.
He was born July 29, 1913, in Sac City, Iowa, a son of John Walter and Mary Elizabeth (Foster) McLaughlin.
As a young boy, his family moved to Ohio.
He graduated from Antwerp High School and continued his education at Bowling Green College.
On Dec. 9, 1936, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Price.
They made their home in Antwerp, Ohio until the early 1940s when they moved to Fort Wayne.
