Edna Vergon, 81

April 10, 2012

SOUTH WHITLEY — Edna M. Vergon, 81, formerly of South Whitley, died at 5:32 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2012, at Warrenton Health Rehab in Warrenton, Ga.
She was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Lagro, a daughter of William and Mildred (Sample) Herrick.
On Aug. 30, 1947, she was united in marriage to Charles L. Vergon.
He died Feb. 26, 1990.
Survivors include two children, Kevin Vergon of Thompson, Ga. and Tina Ryan of Golden Gate, Fla.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Roxie Gloyd, 62

Roxie L. Gloyd, 62, a resident of rural Churubusco in Allen County and wife of Dennis R. Gloyd, died Friday, April 6, 2012, at her home.
She was born at Wolf Lake June 14, 1949, a daughter of Max G. and Lenora M. (Hawk) Gross.
On Sept. 2, 1967, she was married in Churubusco to Dennis R. Gloyd.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis; her children, Kimberly Walker and Angela Sherman, both of Churubusco, Alisa Hess and Jessica Schnellbach, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Jerrold Gross of Churubusco; a sister, Melanie Gilbert of Churubusco; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Alfred Bierbaum, 96

Alfred H. Bierbaum, 96, of Columbia City, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012, at Oaks Nursing Facility.
Born April 9, 1915, in Fort Wayne, he retired after 37 years with General Electric.
He was a member of Dunfee Missionary Church.
He is survived by two sons, Edward Alan Bierbaum, of Larwill and Lawrence William Bierbaum, of Wittman, Ariz; a daughter, Janis Ann (Keith) Saggars, of Columbia City; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn E. in 2008 and parents, William F. and Emma F. Bierbaum.

Mildred Keel, 93

April 10, 2012

Mildred L. Keel, 93, of rural South Whitley, died at 12:40 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2012, at Peabody Retirement Home, North Manchester where she had been a resident since December, 2010.
She was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Fowler, Ind., a daughter of William Warner and Leafie (Lockhart) VanDeripe.
When she was nine, her family moved to a farm southwest of South Whitley, where she has since resided.
She graduated from South Whitley High School.
On July 3, 1945, she was united in marriage to William L. Keel.
A homemaker, she worked a short time at Blue Bell. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Clarene Reid, 65

Clarene Reid, 65, of Ligonier, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 27, 1946, in Goshen, to Clair W. and Phyllis A. (Bitner) Archer.
On Aug. 1, 1965, in Cromwell, she married Paul A. Reid, who survives in Ligonier.

Shearer is wearing a uniform that is similar to his original “satine” Marine uniform he wore in Vietnam in 1963. Twenty-six Whitley County marines attended the event. Loy eats from his original mess kit and drinks coffee from his military-issued canteen cup. The group has a chicken barbecue fundraiser scheduled for May 19 at Wal-Mart and NAPA, both located in Columbia City.

EXPOsed: Chamber’s annual event set for Saturday at ISMS

COLUMBIA CITY – The Whitley County Chamber of Commerce will host its annual event designed to shine the spotlight on area businesses and non-profit organizations.

The Whitley County Chamber of Commerce’s Whitley County Expo begins Saturday at 9 a.m. continuing until 3 p.m. at Indian Springs Middle School, just south of Columbia City on Ind. 9.

Admission and parking are free.

The event will include door prizes and entertainment. A special section promoting the event is inserted in today’s The Post & Mail.

B.A.B.E. filling bottles with $

COLUMBIA CITY — Beds And Britches, Etc. (B.A.B.E.) of Whitley County is having an unusual fundraising campaign that has baby bottles being filled with money.

“April is our biggest fundraising month all year,” said Shawn Ellis, executive director of B.A.B.E. “We have 17 churches and many banks all over Whitley County collecting money in our baby bottles for our program.”

CANCELLED: Many area games cancelled tonight

Several of tonight's events have been cancelled tonight due to weather.

Whitko's home baseball and softball games, Columbia City's game at Wawasee and Col. City's track meet have all been confirmed to be cancelled.

Vodde, Lady Eagles open with perfect game

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s softball team opened its season in prime fashion Monday night, hosting Marion in a perfect 10-0 win.

The game was cut short after the Lady Eagles took a 10-0 lead in the fifth inning after a run by junior Alyssa Brandt.

Senior Hannah Schnorr boosted the score in the third inning with a grand slam to take an 8-0 lead.

Columbia City not only put out a strong offensive performance by senior Allie Vodde, who not only pitched a shut-out, but along with her teammates didn’t allow a single Marion runner on base.

Vodde had 10 strikeouts on 16 at bats.
